... the 24 Series Premier (Season 1, Episode 1) is apparently free on iTunes for a limited time. In my experience, that 43 minutes is pretty well all it takes to get hooked.

Man, this season is kicking all kinds of ass at this point - can't wait to see the last couple episodes!

It really has been a great season. There was a few-hour lull during the Russian Mob/ Dana-Jenny thing ... but it picked up with the eye-stabbing, and hasn't slowed down since. Been a great season.

If it has to end ... I am glad it is ending on a high note.

I've never even watched a single episode of 24. I've never watched Lost before either.

Me too.
I saw a clip of 24 once and it did the whole split screen thingy which I detest, so I never watched it as I don't watch anything with that.
It just bugs me.

As for Lost, I've just never found the attraction of watching a group of people stuck on an island and watching what happens :sleep.

...but that's just me :)

If you like action movies or spy thrillers, you should give 24 a shot. Watch the first few hours of Season 1 ... if you're not hooked, I'd be surprised. You won't be disappointed. It plays like a 24 hour Die Hard movie. Best show on TV.

The split-screen thing is necessary for the "real time" aspect. A lot of the conversations happen by phone, and the whole point is that several plotlines run simultaneously ... so it is a way of giving an update on several plotlines as you come back from a commercial.

It only happens during phone conversations, coming back from breaks (during the ticking clock), and very occasionally to show simultaneous events ... most of the show is not split-screen. It never really bothered me.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was like Die Hard. . .or to say it is the best thing on TV. But 24 has been good (most of the time), and is fun. Mostly mindless action/suspsense, but usually pretty fulfilling once a season gets finished. The main problem is finding the time to sit there and watch hour after hour after hour.

The show is popular among conservatives because it comes up with all these outrageous situations where the viewer comes to think that torture is necessary. But largely, I think Bauer is a-political as a character, which is good.

If you can find the time (I usually would watch seasons while I was sick and couldn't do much of anything productive), it does go by pretty quickly, though. There is inevitable filler when you have so much time to fill in a season, but it isn't too major.

As for the split-screens, I don't think they are necessary for the most part. Do you need to see Bauer hot-wiring a car or driving to some destination while listening to another character talk on the phone? I dunno. You can probably infer that Bauer is doing those things without seeing it. But whatever the case, it never bothered me.

Actually -- Season 1 reminded me A LOT of Die Hard 3. The early Bauer character is pretty McClane-like (without the sense of humor) ... reluctant hero that's always in a little over-his-head. As the show progresses, Bauer seems less in-over-his-head, though.
