Re: 【Avengers: Infinity War -1/6th scale Doctor Strange Collectible Figure】

The addict in me says I need this... but the collector side says since when did you care about Dr. Strange?

Torn...

But as a good friend of mine, Deathstalker, always says: Buy it! You'll regret it if you don't!!!

My final decisions are based on a Venn diagram:

1. Resonant character.
2. Well-executed quality (includes build, likeness, paint etc.) -- baseline is set high. For example, the majority of SSC figures and older HT won't pass.
3. Fits with collection as a whole (either thematically or visually)

If any of these criteria are absent, I shouldn't buy. Note that any of the above can cease to be present:

1. No longer resonant as I outgrow something or otherwise lose interest.
2. Quality superseded by a more advanced version.
3. The overall vision of collection changes.

If any of the above, then I should sell.

It's an imperfectly applied set of rules at times, but it serves me well.

In the case of Strange, I think there will be another version down the line with a subsequent film, but that could take years, so I might err on the side of buying it to avoid an after-beating.

Hot Toys will keep churning these out until the movies start to become unprofitable, which who knows if that'll happen any time soon? :dunno

This is somewhat subjective, isn't it?

Resonant to whom? I find Mosep Bineed in ANH resonant for me as I always noticed him as a kid. But he's certainly not "crucial" to the story or plot of ANH.

Fits in with collection -- I know I can justify almost anything. I'm sure you can too.

So my default has always been your #2: is it an exceptionally well-done figure? I often buy figures that, at their time, are just outstanding and top of the hobby at that moment (IMO). I bought Avengers Loki and Ant-Man for those reasons back in their respective times.

I guess Dr. Strange fits that requirement. He's also resonant, AND he fits in with EG Cap, IM 85 and v3 Star-Lord when I get them. Hmmmmm....

Re: 【Avengers: Infinity War -1/6th scale Doctor Strange Collectible Figure】

Dr Strange and Yondu are two of my recent favorites from HT just in terms of detail and execution. Can't go wrong with this guy, imo.

I know what you mean about “when did I care about this guy”. I found myself thinking about getting a Bucky figure just to have him represented even though his costume is so plain. Hopefully he’ll have something more interesting to be going forward in the MCU than just metal arm guy.

Oh yeah, Yondu is another example of a figure that I bought because he's such an amazing piece of work from HT more than my affinity to the character.

Dammit, I'm convincing myself to spend money on another doll...

100% :lecture

In the case of my personal Venn diagram, myself alone. I tend to look for iconic figures and these days I usually avoid "deep cuts" but that's a snapshot of my current collecting pattern. Could change, who knows?

I give myself a much harder time with that because I don't want to cede too much space. One "fit" criterion for me is colour. Which is why Wasp most likely won't make it in ... this iteration of the costume is too drab, not enough pop.

Solid reasoning. I see myself as an obsessive curator of my own mental map of pop-culture as it relates to me, while I've always seen you as a sort of connoisseur of what the broader hobby has to offer. An aficionado if you will.

Well then, he's at the centre of the Venn diagram! :lecture

You should get him, Wor. He’s truly a wonderful figure. I have my Strange on a shelf by himself, but have had him paired with Star-Lord before and they go nicely together.

My “Venn diagram” is my credit card limit. Have I reached the limit yet?...No, then, ok...preorder that beeeatch!!!

To each their own, but I’m glad I’m not like this:horror

That's a crazy gif. I love it.

One "fit" criterion for me is colour.

That's a big one for me too, but its totally my OCD. And I don't always like that I notice it -- the lack of a particular color.

We talked about the red/gold/blue colors that dominate the MCU heroes... and the need for more green/orange/purple on the shelf. It's pretty silly when you think about it, but I do notice it.

One thing about Strange alone, he has just about every color on him somewhere.

And his time stone effects glow in UV [emoji23] looks cool with IW Thor and BP.

That .gif is amazing !! Gotta post that on a FB collectors group.

No more silly than the actual hobby (which is admittedly pretty whacky ;)). Aesthetics are a big part of it, so colour coordination and balance can matter as much as anything else.
