I think the key difference between Captain marvel and others you mentioned is endearment, at least for me personally in this movie. She just felt...I dunno...snarky & distant/disconnected from everyone? Didn't get that vibe in her solo film; in fact I loved her representation there and look forward to rewatching it many more times on home video. Maybe it's to do with Endgame being done first before the CM solo and brie still finding her way around this character at that point.

I think your last observation is partially correct, but I think it may have less to do with Brie's understanding of the character and more with the writers' understanding of how to use her. In the early part of the film she's the powerful newbie from space with no past relationship with the team, so coming off as disconnected makes sense. Then they have her leave again for the majority of the film, and when she finally does return at the end she's written primarily as a weapon. I'm not sure anyone would come off as endearing with that kind of character development.

Man. Maybe I'm getting old, but I thought this thing was just a convoluted mess. I almost fell asleep a few times in those highly unnecessary recliner seats. There were a few cheers in the theater from a few people at key moments, but by the time the movie was over, as soon as the end credits started there was a quiet and quick rush to the exits and no cheering or clapping or any sort of ovation (this was my experience, yours could have and probably did differ). A few people waited for the non-existent credits scene. I felt like they flung as much **** at the screen as they could just to see what would stick and just made stuff up as they went. The only thing it truly did was have me excited for GOTG 3 (not any possible Thor 4 though). I'm hesitant now for FFH with the recent announcement that it is the final film in the Phase instead of the launch of the next Phase.

As high as IW left me, this was an absolute low. No desire for a second watch.

Wow, that’s different. My theatre crowd was hyped up. I felt like they stuck the landing and controlled the chaos better than expected.

On the other hand, I felt Infinity War was a rushed set-up and not all that much else.

Just got back.

Very, very mixed feelings. Some moments I absolutely adored, but there are other issues I had with character choices, pay off or lack thereof...

Raw feelings right now, MAJOR spoilers:

This was a beautiful showing for both Cap and Tony, even though I hated seeing Tony die. Seeing Cap not only pick up Mjolnir, but wield it like a boss several times was worth the price of admission alone. That he got his moment with Peggy was beautiful. "Avengers, assemble" was all kinds of epic. Both of those characters were done justice in terms of screen time and character arcs.

On the flip side, I almost hated both Thor and Hulk in this film. Ruffalo's take on Hulk Banner was just too goofy for me most of the time, and while Thor letting himself go and being drunk and ridiculous didn't bother me at first, how long it went on for after they got the plan together did. The scene with Frigga was almost ruined for me because of it. It was over the top ridiculous to me.

Speaking of Thor, I would've much, MUCH rather had a scene with Thor and Loki, especially after IW. Loki was barely even in the movie as it was, which was a huge freaking disappointment to me. That we didn't get any scene of them together, when their relationship was so central to the very first Avengers movie, put me off. Loki might as well have been a no show in this. After IW, I wanted something.

Hawkeye and Widow were both great in this film. Widow making the sacrifice made sense with her character arc - but that "Girl Power" tracking shot of the female characters made me think "ya'll just killed the best one". If anyone deserved to be in the front of that it's Natasha. I love most of those female characters, but I admit I almost rolled my eyes a bit. The "Assemble" scene after everyone came through Strange's portals already had me pumped.


I'm not a big Spidey fan, but I do like his relationship with Tony so seeing their reunion got to me. I've become super attached to T'Challa and the BP characters - seeing them come in together at the end, and when Steve and T'Challa exchanged their look put a smile on my face. Wish Okoye had gotten a bigger part in this since she survived the snap, but she didn't have much time.

Falcon Cap made me angry. I felt Bucky was all but ignored after the snapped characters were brought back - and his arc as Cap was something in the comics I loved. All the dramatic character potential lays with Bucky!Cap, not Falcon!Cap (which I would be cool with if they'd passed it to Bucky first). I'm not sure I'm going to watch the Disney show now with how strongly I feel about it. I'm not sure I can enjoy it. Sebastian Stan has been so wasted, and when there's room for him to shine, when it should be his time, they sideline him. I'm super disappointed with that.

This was a great showing for Cap, Tony, Hawkeye, Widow (until her death), Nebula (a favorite of mine now), Rocket and Scott.

Hulk and Thor were terrible in this. There's really no pay off with Hulk, either.

Too little Loki. Passing over Bucky like he's nothing. Losing Natasha........ I definitely find myself agreeing with some reviews I read beforehand where some said how you feel about the movie might depend on how you feel about the choices they made with characters.

I loved moments more than the actual movie, I think.... But I have to let it settle.

Just some thoughts - liked it more than IW but while appreciate the character interactions, once again characters I wanted to see a lot more of got the short stick, while minutes go on with stuff like Tony meeting his father that I didn't think were needed. The handling of Falcon, Loki, Valkyrie, and especially Bucky has been BS through IW and EG - doesn't even make sense that relationships that meant so much to Cap, and Thor, are just blown off. Pretty disgusted about that - also a potential big moment - I dunno when everyone pops back just so rushed.

Mostly tho love Ruffalo thought just too goofy. Not sure how I feel about Thor the Rastafarian. Happy to see SW cut loose.RDJ great actor. Hawkeye and BW great, kudos to Rhodey too. Didn't mind CM she was just kinda there. Too much bloody CGI at the end. Rocket was great.

Guess it was alright. Good, for me not great. Not what I expected. It's weird tho there was a lot of good character interaction still felt like parts rushed too much too. The girl power scene did nothing for me.

Will see again tomorrow but don't think it will be a favorite film for me.

You've almost summed up my post movie thoughts perfectly.. Just to add..

I loved that the initial showdown with "new" Thanos was the three major Phase 1 characters. But Fat Thor was taken too far for me. Funny they found him that way after 5 years, but it would have been nice for maybe his Mjolnir wielding to restore him to greatness. Just disappointing to see a character who almost solo'd Thanos with all the stones look so weak with two weapons against a Thanos without all that power. Professor Hulk, ughh.. again, I guess Avengers 1 will stand as his highlight even after all these movies.

I was glad after all the doom n gloom here that Danvers would be the big hitter and save the day, that she was such a small role character. I'm not one who jumped on all the Captain Marvel hate during her movie and the lead up to this but I found her completely unlikeable here. They really could have written the movie without her. I'm sure they could have found another way to get Tony home. Weakened post-snap Thanos could probably have been beaten without her, and the final fight could have been done without her. Scarlet Witch was awesome in this. Her one on one in fact was probably all we needed without throwing Captain Marvel in.

Overall though, the movie did what it needed. Hit some emotional notes. Retired the original team. Set-up potential Guardian sequels, Spidey sequels, Ant-Man and the Wasp sequels, Dr Strange... maybe more. How enthusiastic the movie public will be, remains to be seen...

I was also not a fan of her in this movie. Her solo film was decent in my mind, but not one of my favourites either.

She seems also a little too powerful imo. She can just fly endlessly in space? Even Superman isn't able to do that.

I don't think she can fly endlessly in space. She had to ride the Benetar to Thanos at the beginning. She could have easily flown alongside it. I don't think Rocket needed a co-pilot.

Liked this better than IW, but yeah, my theater's reaction was kinda flat; quiet. Heard the woman next to me say "what the hell" at the end, and not in a good way.

When they have the final battle with Thanos he is just as hard to kill as when he had the gauntlet on... harder even. At the beginning of Infinity War when he beat Hulk he had the Power Stone, so I assumed that's why he was able to overpower him. That double-ended Final Fantasy sword he had could block Mjölnir and Stormbreaker too.

He did not use the Power Stone against the Hulk in Infinity War. The stones give off a bright glow when they are used. If you watch closely, there is no glow in that fight aboard Thor's ship. The Russos confirmed this too.

It's very refreshing to see that not everyone in this thread is losing their minds in over the top hyperbole like "OMGZZ THIS WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE I LIKE LITERALLY CAN'T EVEN!!!!"

I was a GOOD movie. It was competent, well acted in front of the camera and a team of wizards behind the scenes. But was it perfect? Is it the "10/10!!!!!" so many wanted it to be? No. There were several lulls. There was plenty of the old Hollywood time travel pseudo science. I'm just so glad to see such level-headed posters here that this was a great addiction (conclusion?) to the Marvel Universe stories, but are able to not get sucked into the hype an declare this the finest movie to ever exist. Personally, I still like IW better, and even that was a straight up fun popcorn blockbuster comic book movie. None of these movies are "Citizen Kane." They're just plain FUN. Like watching my old comics from the 90s instead of reading them.

Still pissed they killed Tony though. In my opinion it wasn't even necessary from the story standpoint. Probably just didn't wan to keep paying him those truckloads of money. Making leave behind a 5 year old daughter was especially cruel. Also felt like a middle finger to the audience, like Luke and Han, but not quite as spiteful. Hey, just my opinion. I hated it but I guess some people loved it and think it just "fit" so perfectly. Not me.

My most annoying thing about this movie....

But what annoyed me most was when she was fighting Thanos and was beginning to defeat him until he was assisted by the power stone. Needless to say, that took her out of the game. But DAMNIT! That should have been the HULK in that part/scene - NOT her!!! Being a long time Hulk fan, he wasn't used to his fullest potential and there was no redemption at all from his arse whooping he took during IW. They just turned him into a side-circus goofy character, like Thor. Don't get me wrong, I like to see some comedy in these films, but I felt the Hulk was a little too silly (Thor too, really). Whatever happened to the madder he gets, the stronger? I was hoping to see some rampaging Hulk get his shots in, but no.... With everything that had happened and also with BW dying, what better reason for him not to be super angry and lose control?! And Stark dying, very sad but a fitting end to the universe he/RDJ essentially created.

Professor Hulk was always much weaker than the actual HULK. Now days it's explained that all these variations to the HULK character (Grey, Savage, Professor, World Breaker and so on) are just Bruce multiple personalities and some are stronger some are weaker. The "the madder he gets, the stronger he gets" applied to Savage Hulk. I agree that I'd like to see him fight more instead of all that talk. But as far as stupidity goes, it's down right to the comic. be glad they didn't give him pink bunny slippers...

As for Thor, although that did last longer than I would have chosen, I can see how he would be going through all that. After he lost everyone in his life, half the universe died because he missed his shot. He still looked good before the first attack on Thanos, he left himself go after he thought there would be no hope to bring people back.

Him being hesitant during the time travel made sense too. I mean, if he messed this up, he could loose the Avengers too. Dude would probably kill himself.

While I will still rate this movie a success there are 5 items that are super infuriating to me and collectively almost derailed the entire movie for me.

I will rate them from order of severity.

Spoiler:

1. Is Marvel Studios mistreatment of the Hulk because Universal Studios will not relinquish control of him is that what’s going on here. I mean why else would Hulk’s IW arc NOT be fulfilled WHY! He lost BW and then put on the damn IW GAMMA gauntlet WHY WOULD THEY NOT CUT HIM LOOSE against Thanos and his army in super rage mode WHY MARVEL WHY!!!!!! It didn’t have to be World Breaker Hulk BUT at the very least let him have his freaking redemption from his IW beat down. Instead we get him throwing a stupid bench to showcase his rage, wut! That just hurts me to the freaking core our last chance of seeing Hulk BE HULK...wasted!!! WTF Marvel seriously WTF!
2. Bucky not being the person to speak with elderly Steve IT SHOULD’VE BEEN BUCKY BECAUSE IT ONLY MAKES FREAKING SENSE!!! What a freaking lost opportunity for an incredibly emotional scene! Fine give the shield to Falcon but only after Steve speaks with Bucky. Screw that the shield should’ve went to Bucky nuff said!
3. Dr. Strange 14 million:1 IW arc being relegated to the background instead of having proper relevance to Stark’s sacrifice.
4. Some characters like Bucky and WM completely wasted during the big battle...again! Yes i’m well aware there are dozens of characters but would it hurt to give each one a quick heroic moment similar to how BP was given one this time out.
5. Red Skull not having more to do and Steve not learning of Red Skull being alive and his connection to the stone.

Thankfully there were enough other epic moments to offset those 5 grievances for me.

Surprisingly Thor’s arc didn’t bother me at all it actually made sense and besides he’s had his heroic moments already quite a few of them to be exact.

Stark’s death was powerful and Cap was a serious bad ass and his arc was handled appropriately although I do have lingering questions about his time travel arc.

Grrr I wanted perfection or at the very least Hulk rage dammit!

I’m glad some people love this movie. I enjoyed most of it as I watched it, but for me it went off the rails in the third act, and reduced Thanos into a cartoony, mustache twirling bad-guy.
