I ordered up some various figure parts over Black Friday weekend for a custom figure that I’ll be working on over the coming months.
I’m going to make a 1/6 scale Darth Nihilus.

Does anyone know a safe way that I can dye the tan/brown softgoods from Hot Toys Obi-Wan black without having to deal with the consequences of fading or the black having a blue tint?

Some friends recommend that I use Rit dye, though someone warned me that “artificial fibers” will fade no matter what and that there’s no safe way to do it.

Please point me in the right direction.

I haven't done a ton of dying, but i have dabbled with it on occasion. Rit dye works well for a lot of projects. Plus its easily bought at Walmart and all craft stores (and they ALWAYS have at least a 40% off a single item coupon available). Sometimes artificial fabrics do have a harder time accepting the dye and will either only take a small amount of the color or none at all. I've had occasions where the bulk of the fabric took the dye but the stitching on the hems of the clothes didn't and that was rather annoying.

With you wanting the clothes black, you really can't go wrong. Try the Rit and if its not dark enough or somehow didn't take, try a different dye made for synthetic fabrics. You really can't screw up black as you can only get blackier than your previous attempt.

If you were trying for literally any other color you might run into issues but with black it either is or it isn't and multiple attempts will only get you closer to your end goal. So this is probably an excellent project to get you more familiar with dying. And if they end up fading or having a blue tint, redying them will always be an option.

I've had pretty good luck with having a small junk plastic cup (I think it was actually a coin cup from a casino) as my container for the dying. Just put a small amount of hot water and some dye in it and dunk the fabric. You can create a really concentrated dye that way without worrying about staining a pot or a sink or anything else. I've also used craft popsicle sticks to stir the dye and to fish out the clothes. You'll stain the plastic cup for sure, so make sure you're ready to sacrifice it as your dying cup/bowl/whatever container you choose.

The stitching can be a problem with some dyes, also sometimes you may find you need to dye an item more than once as with lighter material the first attempt can end with a blue-ish colour rather than black.

I've used RIT liquid dye to good effect. It's rare the stitches are a problem, but I also use two bottles just to be safe.
