Just gauging interest here of having a Nomak headsculpt done for commission. I was talking to Skiman and he is interested in doing it, if you don't know his work check out his custom thread, its all top notch. No full details yet, but would there be an interest in having this character done?

Matt13, a friend of mine on the boards here is wanting more baddies in his collection and someone to go against "The Daywalker" as always I'm interested in a challenge and to see how many would be interested in such a sculpt if I were to execute it properly.

This project will more than likely take place at the beginning of the year whenever all my other custom/commissions settle down...

Open (literally speaking LOL) to options but I'll post a few pics of what he had suggested and we'll just go from there!!! Also figured that this would get the most traffic here in the Marvel section with the Blade fans and it's 1/6 companion, it wouldn't get much love down in the custom section so I hope it can stay here.

Awesome piece, really.
Hope your idea works, Ski.
Looks promising, although I have to say I don´t own Blade, therefor this would maybe be in vain.
Of to think about that though, cause Nomak is one bada** character...

I'm usually very well priced with my stuff, my Joe's, Predator heads have been in the range of $45-$60 and that's fully painted, pre-drilled etc.

I never see the need to make Freaks pay $100's for just a head being that it's not even the complete figure.

Not unless something is just massive or a oversized 1/6 character. :lecture

I'm thinking anywhere from $45-$60, $60 would definitely be the high end with the open mandible and just the grimace would be $45, all painted up and pre-drilled, unless you demand a unpainted sculpt :D

I'm going to sculpt each look and then let the Freak members decide which one they want or if they want both headsculpts...!?

So far looks like there are a few that are interested in both takes.

Skiman put me in the both grouping. Are you goin to do them with a neck or ready for a Royce-type body?

Definitely neck with this one, also being consistent with the Blade Hot Toys sculpt would be a good fit.

The open mandible would be all kinds of nightmares with the mold and resin properly filling the mold and curing in the correct spots, hence why I think the guy from Hong Kong didn't go about the commissioning route :lol :banghead

Two heads in this fashion could be possible depending on interest of either one :dunno

but here's a idea of a sculpt that I plan to replicate, it seems that the sculpt was in Hong Kong but was never offered as a custom or for commission.

As of right now I have a few more projects besides this one so it looks to be booked for a little bit, if no one has come through for you within time, I can see about fitting it in depending on what the project entails. No need to get into details though as of now though.

I'm really looking forward to this sculpt. Although he's a great character, I don't want a fig of this character. I don't doubt he'll look great though.
And $45 for a painted head? That's simply an amazing price. :)

Not interested in the head or owning the figure but interested in seeing Dave's progression. He has gotten better and better with each head he does so I can't wait to see how this one turns out. Especially the open mouth.

Good luck Dave!!!

badass!!!!

Btw, are you going to do a neckless version?

both of these will have a neck, especially the open mouth and they'll also be consistent with the Blade head which has a full neck.

Working off of this image that I screen printed off the DVD the other day, I changed the color and contrast so I wouldn't get thrown off with the paint apps and that it would resemble my color of sculpey firm without throwing off my eye :D

http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m340/ski31man/Customs/NomakMoc.jpg

it's further than this right now and a little more cleaned up but you get the gist, I hope everyone is happy with what they see right now but yea now comes more smoothing and adding in some textures, I'll add the teeth last for lack of not messing up the mouth shape.

Here's the WIP with appended eyes and mouth :D

http://i332.photobucket.com/albums/m340/ski31man/Customs/IMG_7534_Moc_teeth.jpg

Again this was the last progress pic I've taken, I'll continue to smoothen and add the details/textures... Let me know what you guys think.

edit: mouth has been extended on his right side out a little further to the smile line, I forgot that I changed that last night right before bed :D

I also thought about the paint apps going into the neck would make it more flowing with the mandible split/neck veins trickling down from the initial sculpt would give it a nice touch what do you think?

Smoothened him out a little bit more tonight and played with Photoshop some to give an idea.

Items to work on:
1) Smooth in the mouth lines
2) Spacing on right ear to eye ratio
3) Shorten chin and add the slight split to the bottom
4) Soften chin split a little more and make more natural
5) Slightly lower the brows on each eye
6) Curve right ear slightly a little more

Looks good so far. The only thing I would ask you to kinda watch is the overall size of the head. It can be a little tricky keeping it small enough while still allowing for the detail. I'm sure you know this tho...Just a reminder.

Skiman
12-17-2010, 06:06 PM
Oh yes, it's in scale, I've constantly matched it with other 1/6 items/heads.

It might look large in those close ups just because they are really close up pics taken. I'll take some pics maybe even next to the Blade head for scale comparison.

edit: also I didn't scale it correctly in the PS with the bash of his body :lol, I just did a copy and paste and shrunk it.

damagecase
12-17-2010, 10:03 PM
Yeah, I don't really know your methodology of sculpting. I know some work over the top of a TT head and some work from scratch. But if your doing more of an overlay the size can be problematic. It looks like its from scratch though which is all the more impressive. Keep it up.

Thank you fellas for the comps, I'm really glad that members are liking the sculpt and thanks for the constructive criticism. Other eyes are always a great idea for an artist since I've been looking at the head for hours on end, details can slip through the cracks.

PHEW, well there's one bad boy down for now the teeth are simple and sculpting the rest of the head should be downhill from there as well.

What are you guys going to use for gloves?
Hi damagecase, I'm planning on using the Soldier Story Bastogne gloves and hands. I've chopped the ends off some of the glove fingers and put some holes in the knuckles and dirtied them up using acrylics. I'm not sure how film accurate they are, but i'm pleased with how they look. :)

For the coat, I remembered I had a Napoleon greatcoat in my spares box. It was grey, but pretty easy to dye and a cheap beany bear gave up his skin to provide the material for the collar.

Btw, any tips on what to use for his scarf, guys? It appears to be maroon and grey in the costume photos.

No, what do you desire? :bow

Tongue was the only trait I was going to ask on what the preference would be, everything else is dummy proof.

http://www.howardsstudios.com/Nomak5.jpg

Wasn't for sure as to have the tongue collapsed or rolled up as about to expand (like in other pics), expanded would definitely be tricky and very carefully executed on the mold and taking out of the mold, etc...

Honestly, I like the tongue kinda rolled up, as it is in the second photo... As for teeth, the large mandibular fangs probably should be made out of something with a bit of backbone... may be coating stick pins with a clear epoxy or something like that. I would imagine its your best option to add the teeth after the head is molded... Actually I have know idea of how you could mold such things

Cool, that would be the easier option.

As for teeth, the sculpt will be resin, it shouldn't be a problem.

As for adding teeth, that's the same method on the 1st sculpt, the know how on molding and casting or creating the sculpt is not a problem. I was just going to ask for opinions on the tongue/expanded/or non-expanded.

Anyone else object to the rolled up version or prefer something else, if not I will proceed with rolled up tongue open mandible version?

Swappable tongues??? :yess:

I could sculpt a separate insert if we wanted to go that route?

The rolled up tongue would have a place holder for the expanded piece that would just need to be slipped in front for the other display tongue option, let me know I'm open to ideas and I want this to the "ultimate Nomak" in 1/6 scale form out to date.

That would work or a peg option for both tongues :hi5:

Can't have an open mouthed Nomak without being able to have both tongues. :1-1:

:dunno I'll sleep on it, 4 molds, 2 being for tongues sounds like a lot more $$$$ :lol

I'll think on how to cheapen this cost down, maybe put both tongues on one mold.

Here's my arguement for one mold, tongue in: The tongue in the reaper strain is only for feeding and delivering the virus to its victom/host. Ergo, under most, if not all poses it isn't really necessary to have it extended. I mean if your doing a roaring pose it works in as well as out, if he's feeding, it works in as it would usually be posed the moment before he latches on. I mean it seems like a whole lot of extra work for very little benefit. Skiman, you can't please everyone. I wouldn't scream and cry if you did decide to do it with the tongue out, but I may mod it myself for the look I prefer. I really don't think you should go through all the extra work of doing 2 tongues. It doesn't seem reasonable in this context. Don't get me wrong, the idea is sound and I sure you'd make it look amazing, I just don't think it would be worth it in the mark up you would need to charge and the effort you would have to put in. This set is already the ultimate Nomak. Keep it simple as possible. The more moving parts, the more things can go wrong, Know what I mean?

Whatever the tongue decision, I’ll in. Thanks for presenting options. However, I keep envisioning a reaper in a death grip by a Hot Toy predator with the reaper’s tongue out stretched.

I would even purchase a Steve Wang / concept version like this… (Hopefully, it is ok to post this picture.)

"Wow" indeed. The head looks great on your figure Skiman, you have truly nailed that sculpt. Am looking forward to seeing him painted up, too.
The scarf I bought on the 'bay arrived today, just waiting on the boots now. Apart from that and some further weathering/distressing of the clothing, my figure is ready for that head, (but knows that custom work takes time and is quite happy to be a patient bunny). :D

Definitely trying to go one solid piece on this sculpt, Damagecase had it right whenever you add more complexity to something it's just more things to go wrong. Being resin I have little worry about anything snapping or breaking off unless you were meaning to do it. :D

Thanks everyone for the kind words as well, I think I will be going with the rolled up tongue option also to keep cost down without another mold piece.

Pouring has commenced, opened my Saves Punisher hands today and I'm wow'd by them, actually the skin tone is perfect for Jared and the rubber-ish bendable hands are perfect for broken fingers or odd positioning which takes place in the film.

I'm not sure yet but I'm pretty sure that I don't need to do a thing with them besides some tearing and weathering. WOW that was a surprise.
