Yet 500 exclusive is obviously a profit maker for them.

No it isn't.

The only reason the last 2 X-files figures were even released was due to the fact that SS had already wasted time and money developing the fugures. If SS had known how poor the X-Files figures were going to sell,at the least the second series, Krychek and Skinner would have never been developed. SS had to try and recoup some of the loss they had already took from paying the sculptor and their own "development team." Remember Krychek also was suppossed to have a standard and exclusive version but the figure had so little preorders that SS canceled the standard version Krychek and just released the exclusive. The standard version got canceled all together. SS had always intended to sell more than 500 Krycheks but couldn't due to poor sales.

Patient Zero was a special exception cause he was a Con exclusive. Also outsides the sculpt, Zero is rather plain. Nothing really special about it.

And yet the Krycek and Skinner figures sell for upwards of $200 on the secondary market... go figure (pun intended).

I once toyed with the idea of trying to do a retailer exclusive of a character (like the Medieval Kurgan) and floated the idea past SSC. The minimum amount they'd have to sell is 3000 figures. Now that's at the wholesale price, so when they do an internet exclusive it's a few less, but 500 wouldn't break even.
