Sideshow Astromech custom, painting and parts

Hey guys!

I know a few have done repaints of the Sideshow astromechs, and I've got some I want to do. Has anyone dismantled the droid for painting or is it just better to paint it assembled?

Also, has anyone done custom replacement domes for the astromechs?
