The Crimson Sky already happened in season 1, and worked successfully.
So maybe season 2 is "Crimson Sky.. Aftermath".
I feel like I missed Crimson Sky.
I don't know what I was expecting. Truth is, a big fight would get boring quickly, most likely. But they kept saying Crimson Sky was like the Apocalypse so I was getting ready for more canon fodder.

Crimson Sky is indeed a huge thing.
Begins with many steps, sacrifices from the pawns, and then the letter.. that decides the outcome of the huge war.
Fun fact is, young Miyamoto Musashi was in that war.. survived, thankfully!
Yeah it was odd that the show makes it sound like Toranaga takes over the country without a fight, when in fact there was a pretty epic battle with Ishido. So not sure why we couldn't get at least a taste of that.
I appreciate the cleverness of his plan and the misdirect, but it still can't help but feel anticlimactic after the season long buildup and promises of something big at the end.

Well the battle hadn’t happened yet at that point, no?
They tell you there’ll be a “battle”. We just know he’s already won before it even starts.
Does Ishido even fight or does he just surrender when everyone else turns on him?
Budget is my only guess.

I dunno what happened in the book,
but if we refer to the actual Ishido (Ishida Mitsunari), he fought but lost as predicted by Toranaga (Ieyasu). He tried to escape but was caught by villagers, and ended up executed.
His head was placed on a stand for all the people in Kyoto to see.

The more I reflect on the final episode the more satisfied I am with it. There were some beautiful exchanges, especially the final scenes involving Torinaga and Yabushige, and Blackthorne and Fujiko. Also Ochiba using Mariko's poem to signal her intentions at the Battle of Sekigahara. I would've liked to see more than the brief snippet of how the battle ended up, but overall the finale enhanced the series imo. There were moments of violence throughout, but it was never about the battle itself so much as how the outcome would ultimately be engineered.

Yes.. Unlike a cliche Hollywood ending, the series ended like a haiku.

Hmm, not sure how to feel about this. I'd certainly love to see more of this world and Sanada in this role... but I'm also not sure what the point would be, as the main story has already been told. And we already know the outcome.

As I understand it, the show covered the entire book. Was there a second book on which to base the second season or would they be relying entirely on current day writers? The first season was great but they had a book to base it on.

Just another studio trying to cash in on the hype instead of leaving a good thing be.
Only the one book. It's based on real history of course, so there's still lots to draw on, but I can't see it being nearly as interesting with Toranaga already established as Shogun and Blackthorn now familiar with Japanese culture and able to speak the language.

I know the history and quickly realised the story was about Tokugawa Ieyasu's rise to Shogun and of course, his real life story continued, however, you're exactly right, the interesting story elements for these characters is done.
The hugely engaging part of the series was the character interactions. The tactical maneuvering. Intrigue and betrayal. Defeating a enemy before you even step onto the battlefield. It wasn't about grand samurai battles and epic sword duels. It was about the duty within everyone's class and societal roles that binds them. About how that can be a person downfall, how it can trap them but is also freeing in a way.
With no book to adapt to the screen, the core strength of the show is lost. Expect lots of mindless battles and current day writers with zero life experience trying and failing hard to match up.

Well, we saw what haplened to Game of Thrones after they ran out of source material.
Yeah it probably says a lot that even Clavell never wrote a sequel, despite the massive popularity of his book and how deeply invested he was in that world. So I really can't see a bunch of TV writers doing any better.

They just want to switch categories for the Emmy's to the drama category because it is so weak this year, all they have is The Crown and The Morning Show. Shogun would easily win best drama.
