I thought that paypal often holds the funds for 30 days unless you are an account with a lot of good history on selling goods with no disputes? I've sold stuff on ebay before and had to wait 30 days to get any funds from Paypal. Don't understand why it wouldn't be the same with these scams.

It's like check kiting basically. Someone does it because they need funds early (knowing they will have the funds for a few days to cover it) and also knowing the dispute process takes at least 14 days to get a resolution even if you escalate it right away. Sure the money will get taken back from them, but in instances where they need it a day or two early it's basically a payday loan or paycheck advance with no fees.

So, it seems to me that even if Paypal gives the money back, this is still criminal activity. It is Grand Theft (if more than $1000, I think) during the period they have the money, and at least attempted grand theft even if we get it back. While it might not matter to one of the overseas hackers, this person is in NYC. Between all the emails and real names and addresses we have from Paypal there is a lot of contact info (it was trivial to find out where the 'girlfriend' currently works).

Unless these are totally stolen accounts being used by someone totally unconnected, it seems mighty stupid to do this. Especially to so many people. I'm contemplating filing a criminal complaint with both my local PD and the NYPD using all the contact info. Also curious what happens if we call the place of employment for the girlfriend. My understanding is that Paypal sometimes asks for a police report to bolster your claim.

I know the scammer is reading this thread. Might be wise to just go ahead and click refund to everyone and not wait out the time that Paypal will take to resolve before one of us gets annoyed enough to pursue.

Just got my case closed in my favor and money refunded to me by calling PayPal (it was technically supposed to take another couple of days but the representative more or less implied that due to the status of his PayPal account they could go ahead and process the refund early), and I hope everyone else gets their money back shortly! This is my first time in 11 years of using PayPal and eBay I've ever had to go through any type of claim or dispute so I'm definitely taking it as a learning lesson.

Good luck to everyone else, and ****** this POS.

Wow this is a reality check for sure. Brings back bad memories I was taken like this on the TF forum a few years ago and he was the buyer. I sent my items first and he was like screw yah! He trick about 25 members some lost like 600.00. For toys that's a lot of dough.

Right but that's through eBay, not paypal. When they were one and the same company (as they were for a long time) eBay could restrict access to funds on items sold until a seller had "proven" they could deliver on items. With paypal based transactions separate from eBay you don't or didn't need to since all they require is a valid bank account on file (which they prove through the deposit of ten cents or whatever when you initially sign up). So long as the routing and account numbers were fine, someone could do this. They'll get caught eventually and shut down, but they can still wreak havoc for a couple of weeks
