Thanks Oxfordian, I was gonna make the same reply. All of the Istari were assigned colors, White being the highest in the Order--he and Gandalf have a huge debate over it in FOTR, when Saruman takes of the title "Saruman of Many Colours," a very symbolic change to say the least--to which Gandalf rejoins with one of my favorite lines, "I liked white better." Color is very important to the ranks of the Wizards.
