I'm planning to make my first ever mould and cast soon, following this tutorial:

https://www.paint-sculpt.com/tutorials/mold-making-tutorial/mold-making-tutorial-overview.html

I'm still waiting for the silicone and resin to arrive, as I ordered online.

I do however, have lots and lots of wax lying around (ex-candles!). I know that you can cast in wax, but my question is this - is it also possible to make a mould in wax?

that is a great tutorial btw. I don't think a wax mold would work since resin generates some degree of temperature when it's setting, so it would melt the wax. :p

I wondered if that might be the case, at least in terms of a reaction, but I thought resin was two liquids just mixed at room temperature?

Is there anything else besides resin I could use to cast?

Resin's curing process generates the heat. They actually make a molding wax but its got a higher amount of plasticity. Candle wax is way to soft to get a decent mold from. It would be extremely easy to damage all the detail when pulling out the original.

Ah well, it was worth asking anyway. Thanks for the helpful replies.

Can't wait for the silicone and resin to arrive!
