I have had the laptop that I am currently using for about 8 years (more or less). When I bought it...it was one of the last units that Gateway custom made before selling their commercial support to the clowns who went belly-up shortly after buying it. I had it loaded with the highest-end stuff Gateway had at the time so that it would last...and it did. I am only just now starting to feel the need for a new laptop...and this one still works as well as it did new. It is just that faster internet and graphics capabilities are starting to get farther ahead of me than I prefer.

Anyway...I am looking in to getting a new laptop and a couple of names that I have not heard of are popping up frequently...ASUS and MSI.

Does anyone have any experience with these computers? And if so, do you recommend them?

There is a customized MSI Dragon Edition that I am kind of Jonesing for...but at the price, I want to gather all the intel that I can on them.

What do you want to use it for?

This is what I'm considering getting:

Good for gaming, much thinner than other gaming laptops and high quality build. You can get more performance for the same cost from other places, but they'll be bigger.

Other one I was considering is this:
https://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y510p/

Has the option for dual gaming cards, and other pretty good stats for much less.

Largely video playback. I travel for work and I use my laptop for entertainment as well as reporting/researching project information.

Gaming as well, but not to a great extent. I want to be able to stream movies in HD from the internet and have great bluray capabilities.

I appreciate the links, but the system that I get has to be a 17" and not a Mac.

Alienware isn't very reliable, and they have very poor customer service when something goes wrong. A friend had one and something got messed up with the screen so they sent it in, but when they sent it back they didn't actually fix anything.

If you must have a laptop, I would just go with a cheap new, or better yet, outlet/off lease/refurb dell. If it breaks in a year so be it.

Check slickdeals or techbargains for coupon codes (usually around 30%).

My Dell has been running strong for the last 4 years,no problems. Asus is a great brand,Id go with them as well. Just stay away from HP at all costs.

What a couple of others have said: what are you going to use it for?

I had to guess based on how you described the one you want to replace that you're after a gaming machine...
