It has to be the material braking down.

He was not like that when I unpacked him!

He has been on display in my room where no one has messed with him!

As far as I can tell fiberglass should outlast pretty much anything... its not something that typically breaks down. But you alway have that chance that an odd mixture (or combination of factors) can cause problems.
