He's that way because of what happens in the clone wars cartoon.

I know what you're saying, but the way it came about was actually the exact opposite. The Clone Wars creators added that BECAUSE Lucas made Grievous have a cough in the movie. Lucas claimed that he wanted the audience to know the Grievous was a cyborg and not a robot.

The CW guys added the Mace bit as an EU explanation for the cough after Lucas explained to them that Grievous had the cough. Lucas didn't add it because of CW, the CW series added it because of Lucas, if that makes sense.

That's true. I think the cough was goofy as well but Lucas didn't ask me sadly.
