Do blurays play from the inside out, or from the outside in?

I'm studying chest and abdominal cross sectional anatomy, probably for far too long, and have Indiana Jones film marathon playing in the background...

So, I got to wondering...

I'm pretty sure there are layers to a bluray, right?

But...

Do blurays pay from the inside out, or from the outside in?

You know, this actually surprises me. I'm so naive. I really just thought things all played like records did back in the day...
 
Nope. Never really looked into why they did it that way, but that is the case.

Oh, and to answer the layer question: They can be either single or dual layer. A single will hold 27GB of data, a dual will hold 54.
