1. As DiFabio said, that was simply him being a coy playah.
2. Regardless, it took, what, 36 years until someone mocked that line? As opposed to people instantly shaking their heads at Hopeman's comments.

Superman can be a bit smug if he wants but not after the city of Metropolis has been half-obliterated, thousands are dead, and the whole reason it happened in the first place was because his people found out he was there. Being smug then just makes him a ***t.

I do think its the smugness that really kills it. If he had taken a more Captain America "we're all in this together" approach with the humans before and after the battles things would have played much differently. It also didn't help that Jor-El implied that he could "save them all" right before millions lost their lives. Rightly or wrongly that also makes it seem like innocent lives were Clark's to lose.

Cold Superman and a little ***** for Batman, poor nerds, no wonder they're crying a year later.
Bruce and Alfred were more reflective about the loss of ONE mansion at the end of Batman Begins, let alone half a city.

I said...ok, maybe it will improve, maybe the destruction porn will resonate something new in me.
