This is pretty much how a lot of statues are made. Someone sculpts the figure in 3d, then the 3d model is printed using one of these printers. A mold is made and and that is used to mass produce. Actually, you can get 3d printers of your own for like $3000. They are obviously much cruder and smaller but they can still get the job done. The resin isn't that expensive either.

The cheap ones are completely useless. They can't do very thin objects or small details. So they wouldn't be helpful for collectibles at all.


But Sideshow has been using 3D printing more and more now. I think some of their new maquettes are 3D prints. Looks like they're also doing that for stuff like armor and droids along with weapons. For stuff like that it's ideal, just to get something exact.
