I really liked that Casey Affleck was nominated for the Jesse James movie. That was my favorite of the year.

I haven't seen it yet but I will be watching it in two weeks on Blu-ray. I remember when I saw the trailer and just based on those two minutes, I said to myself, "I hope this movie gets nominated for best cinematography." Looks like it did.

I am looking forward to seeing it, along with There Will Be Blood. I am hoping that the nominations for that one will generate enough interest to bring it to town. After that, Michael Clayton is coming out on video on February 19th, so I can catch that one in time for the Oscars that weekend. And if I can convince myself to go and see Atonement, I will have at least seen the five best picture nominees.

Why the hell is Norbit nominated for best make-up:confused: Couldnt they have found something better or were they all done with CGI?

It sucks a bit that American Gangster didnt get more nominations:emperor

Can't wait to see There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men. It just sucks major balls that they won't premier untill AFTER the Academy Awards:emperor:monkey2

My initial predictions: (I've won the office pool two years in a row :D)

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Cate Blanchett - I'm Not There

Also I'm really rooting for Persepolis!

I think Ruby Dee will win because its one of those "Make Up" Oscars for not being awarded for previous works, while I want Depp to win I think that Clooney will get it for Clayton and I think that No Country for Old Men will take a lot of these...

No way anybody beats Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood. It was the oddeset, yet memorable movies I've seen in a long time.

Yup, i think best actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and best actress in a supporting role (Cate Blanchett) are the only one's that seem like a lock, imo.

Mad props to Cate Blanchett. Has anyone been nominated for both leading and supporting in the same year?

Daniel Day Lewis will win Best Actor.

Diablo Cody will win Best Original Screenplay.

Casey Affleck will win for Jesse James.

Cate Blanchett will win for I'm Not There.

I think Ellen Page has a chance at winning for Juno--the Academy likes to support youngers actresses. She would set a new record for the youngest woman to win. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Laura Linney win, as she deserves it by now, but how many people saw her performance? And Julie Christie could get one of those de facto lifetime achievement awards--although it didn't work for Peter O'Toole recently, and sometimes the nomination is enough for older actors.

If Cate Blanchett wins, it will be for playing Bob Dylan, not Queen Elizabeth--but who else could get nominated twice in the same year for playing two famous people of different genders?

In the end, I would say that it's really between Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard.

For director, it will most likely go to whoever wins with the DGA this Sunday. I am going to tentatively guess PT Anderson could win the DGS and the Coens will get the Oscar.

Best Picture could go anywhere...

I don't think there is absolutely any way that Ellen Page wins for Juno. She's the flavor of the month and will not get the win, although it is nice to see her recognized with the nomination.

The real travesty is that the most well-acted, perfectly-directed and wonderfully written picture of the year was not even recognized, and that is Zodiac. Noms should have been given to the movie, David Fincher, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo at least. Zodiac was released way back in the beginning of 2007 and did not make a boatload of cash because people can not deal with the lack of a perfectly tied ending.

Juno was a very good movie, but not even close to the same league as Zodiac.

Zodiac was a great movie. At worst Robert Downey Jr. should have gotten a nomination.

I think Julie Christie might win for Best Actress....she's gotten a few nominations for this role already. For the young Juno actress, I think it's more of an aknowledgement than anything...if it was a supporting actress category, perhaps...but best actress, I don't see her getting it.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Cate Blanchett nominated for a best and supporting actress Oscar before?

I too was glad to see Viggo nominated....but no Russell Crowe anywhere...or Christian Bale....:monkey2:monkey2 There were just so many good actor roles this year....hard to pick just a few.
Anyway, my big disappointment was no nominations for Eddie Vedder for his music on Into the Wild...I mean Enchanted got 3 of the song nominations....that's a little much I think. Also no props to 300...not even technical ones. :monkey2

I think I read that the score for Into The Wild and There Will be Blood were not eligible because of some bs rules.
