Hi guys,
I'm toying with the idea of building a R1 Droid. If you have any reference pics please send them my way if you could.

Re: Help with R1 project

Hey OT, I have The new essential guide to droids, it has a nice pic of an R1 in it... unfortunately, my scanner's broken ATM, so the best I can do is give you this version of the same pic I found on google... sorry, if I get my scanner/printer fixed or replaced, I'll scan the picture in. That way, it'd be better quality... but for now, here's all I got:

Re: Help with R1 project

Did some calculating and it looks like a R1 would be between 12-13 inches tall and the widest point would be almost 5" Doesn't seem to difficult, but the top of the dome might give me problems.

I'm looking at my Hasbro R1 and this thing doesn't look like it comes apart without tearing it up. I rather not destroy it because it's the only one I have.

Re: Help with R1 project

Do you have any pics of what you did do?
I didn't realise there was a thread already started on this guy until today:slap...so I thought that I'ld post on here rather than get off topic on Darth IMpoor's thread.
Anyway,I just so happened to stumble across a few of the pieces back when I attemped to start R1.I know there where a few more pieces(for the upper body)but had no luck finding them. Here's what I did find.

Re: Help with R1 project

Very nice. I don't have a lathe, so I will be using ABS. BTW what is the measurement of the bottom of the head. Just wondering if you came up with the same #'s as I did.

Re: Help with R1 project

Nice work Enaud!

I wish I had a lathe... the fanciest tool I have is a dremel! :lol And trust me, it's not very fancy!

Have you gotten anywhere with the R1 yet OT? Cuz I wanna see pics! :D

Re: Help with R1 project

I don't have a lathe myself but fortunatly had access to one.The head at the base is 4 7/8" diameter & 4" tall. The top ring where the dome begins is about 3 1/8".
The body was a piece of a thick shipping tube that is 3 1/4" diameter. He stands right at 12 1/2".The base is 3" at it's highest point.I remember that piece being a pain in the a$$ to make because of it being a cylindrical trapiziod with the funky compound radius it has. Then again I took the hard route by shooting to make the bulk of it as one solid piece. It could probably be made several & easier ways than how I went about it.
Hope this helps you out some.

Re: Help with R1 project

OW my days!! Enaud you do my head in!!! The finish and quality of your work is amazing the R1 looks stunning!!!!!!!

Ow and lathes are great... but I think the mrs would kill me if I bought one of those!! LOL I would love a laser cutter. I asked..... and she just gave me the look!! and asked.. "well how much are they?" owww a glimmer of hope I thought..... "Well... the basic one one is about £15000." I then got "The Look" again and I stopped talking and went back to painting a dollie.... :(

Re: Help with R1 project

I want one of those Selective laser sintering setups that uses 3d info from a computer program to tell a laser to harden resin and bond microscopic layers of resin together to create anything you want in 3d, but I wouldn't want to even think what that would cost, paying to have it done costs more than I want to think about.

I would think rapid prototyping at home would be a customisers wet dream.:lol

Actually i just tried to see what one costs and every one that sells them doesn't show prices on their web site.:horror

Re: Help with R1 project

Thanks guys.
I guess now that I found these parts that I started so long ago I might should put him on my list of projects to complete.

Dorg,Viv-Everyone has their dream toys, lol. Those both would be awesome to have...talk about some high tech customising.

Re: Help with R1 project

yeah, a CAD printer would be awesome!

See, they don't put the prices on the website cuz then you don't know how much it costs right away, so instead you just keep looking at the features and they hope eventually you'll drool enough to vow to yourself that you "must get it, no matter the cost!" and then you do...

if they went around putting the price at the bottom, no one wants to pay that much and then the price scares people away before they can drool over the awesome features... :lol

No not yet. I have been working 7 days a week all month and have zero time for my hobby. I'm tired as hell. It's either work or keeping my GF happy. I never seem to find time. When I built the Gonk my FG was out of town. :hi5:

:gah: I'm going through exactly the same thing... and I've also been :sick

so I've also had zero time for the past two and half months, been working 7 days a week, and I've been exhausted too. And my GF has been taking up my time as well. I totally feel your pain, OT!

Hopefully you'll be able to find some time to work on the R1 again soon, seems like a really cool project so far.

Re: Help with R1 project

Well I need to figure out where to start with this guy. If I can figure out the head, the rest is easy.

I would like to buy the Head and base from Enaud. Hey Enaud you hear me? How much buddy? :yess: Cones are a pain to make out of sheeting. I made a to scale Ecape pod years ago and it was a challenge.

Re: Help with R1 project

OK, I have done some preliminary plans for my 1/6th Scale R1-G4. I have also taken apart a Hasbro R1 for reference. For the main body I'm using 3-1/2" ABS pipe and cut it on a table saw. Here's where I am at......
