I don't know how some people do it: display all the variants like Hasbro figures -- R2 clean, R2 dirty, R2 with tray, R2 with arm extended, R2 with periscope, on and on... and then Luke Farmboy, Luke camo, Luke Jedi, Luke pilot, on and on, and then Leia princess, Leia Hoth, Leia Bespin, on and on, and then...

It's insane.
I try to just get the best possible version of a character. I think most of the Luke's look off until the newer Bespin release which I think looks great, not perfect but great. I only have 1 Vader and can hopefully obtain the ROTJ Vader coming up so I can have the ANH masked Vader and then the ROTJ version with the headsculpt. After that I don't need any more Vaders. I don't have a Han either but the ROTJ one looks amazing so I pre-ordered that. I only need one C-3PO which will be the ROTJ version and I already have the Sideshow R2 which is fine for me, not sure why it gets so much hate.

Collect OT-only SW is the answer - no PT, no Disney SW, no Marvel, no DC, no Potter or LOTR, no "cinema icons," etc etc (I'm not 100% on this: I do have 25 Raiders/Indy figs) - that's how you can have a "all the Hasbro variants" display in 1/6.

It will still add up to 200+ figs, but I manage to keep all of that displayed in one room with only a couple of cabinets slightly more crowded than I'd like. And yes, I have LOTS of Hasbro-esque variants (5-6 R2s, 4 C3POs, 3 Chewies, 5 snowies, 4 Tuskens, 5 Vaders, 4 Bobas, 10 Leias, more than 20 Lukes, pretty much every imperial trooper/officer variant no matter how minor, etc.)

If I had room and money to burn I’d have every iteration of my favorite characters but I am limited on space and money so I choose my doubles sparingly. Depending on your definition of “double”. If you mean multiples of the same character in the same outfit yet slightly varied or the same character in different outfits completely.

I think the only real double I have as far as the same outfit is Jedi Luke. Jabba’s Palace (Cloak on), Sail Barge (just vest), Endor (poncho), and Final Duel (black outfit with belt). I’d have one more if I had space and money for the sandstorm deleted scene.

The multiple characters of different outfits like dessert Luke and stormtrooper Luke I have several.

I think Hasbro trained us to want all figures, no matter how slightly different, in our collections. It’s harder to train yourself out of that mindset than it sounds.

As far as R2 is concerned, I bought the SS cause it was a decent price when it came out and it was better than the Hasbro one I had as a stand in. Once the HT was released I kept the SS rather than trying to sell it off cause I know I wasn’t going to get a good price for it. So I regulated him to the sail barge only display. Plus I needed someone to stand with Skiff guard Lando.

Unfortunately the SS serving tray doesn’t fit on the HT R2. I’ve tried. Without modification it’s not possible. I kept my sideshow version as a ROTJ R2 so I could display him with the tray. It helps cover the ugly seam on the dome.

Did you do a whole body swap to achieve that Lando look or were you able to just pull out the SS neck? How easy is it to go back and forth

I bought a second headsculpt and cut the neck off it to fit the SS body. I tried doing a body swap but the deep neckline on the clothing exposes any neck joint even with futzing. I thought it was the easiest solution. When I swap I just pop the helmet sculpt onto the body since you can’t really see the face underneath. I suppose if I really wanted to be full on accurate I’d buy another sculpt to fit inside the helmet but I feel like that would be a waste right now.

Did you remove the weathering on your SS R2? Mine seems to be much more weathered and grimy.

This is what I am struggling with right now. I'm new to Hot Toys collecting and the impulse is to buy everything I see that I feel I "need". I personally do not like the look of mass grouping displays much preferring the museum style where you have one figure per display section/shelf etc.

Ive only been at it for about 6 months now and am already accumulating more figures than I can comfortably display!

No. Mine was a first run on the first batch. I think the second run had more weathering but I’d have to comb back through posts in that thread. Mine had minimal weathering from the start.

I think everyone starts out with the sparse "museum display" ideal. :lol When I started I wasn't even sure I wanted figs like Vader, Palps or troopers, just narrowly focused on a few heroes and some of the coolest Sideshow creatures (Jabba was my centerpiece-needing-some-company back then.)

I display in Besta cabinets with raised glass shelf in the back and have a rule of no more than five across the glass shelf and no more than six human-type figs (can be seven for smaller figs) on the cabinet "floor"and it seems to still feel like that "walking thru Magic of the Myth exhibition" density. I do like the sparse classic "no more than three per Detolf shelf" look but think slightly more density can still achieve a nice not-too-crowded level.

But I do see pics and vids of those "standing room only" 1/6 collection displays where you can barely see figs even in the middle let alone the back and it does seem like a waste.

You can do the q-tip + isopropyl to easily remove the weathering on the dome and make it look much more metallic. I'd say its essential to get the best look from SSC R2. I have 2 HT R2s and 2 SSC and I think the isopropyl trick brings the SSC up closer to the HT level.

Ah okay, I can kind of see the original SS neck now, thanks for the info. :duff Looks great.

I tend to prefer with the helmet, as you said you can't really see the SS face, but I've never even considered using the SS unhelmeted head since it looks a bit cartoony.
Justin's review is giving me second thought on skipping this guy. He really looks terrific in a lot of those photos and the odd speckled weathering doesn't look as distracting as I thought it would.
It does look really great in the review. I'll have to see how it stacks up against the Tama in person.

Hope you weren't planning to preorder one! Should still be other retailers you can try
yeah I was as I have enough points now for 10% off or $50 off.
Likely pre sold out.
I was playing roulette with him,Padme and the new Vader.
Sometimes they take them down and put back on when instock...
I'll keep an eye on GoFigureCollectibles too.
