It's a really unfortunate thing that HT decided to do the one sculpt for ESB and ROTJ. I really believe that some of these issues were to do with manufacturing tolerance issues for accomodating the Anakin head or reveal (the shallow teeth angle, the cut in the tusk rails, the slight gap between lower and upper halves that create the slightly bigger mouth triangle etc.)

That ROTJ/ESB pair-up brings me to the other thing that kinda bugs me about this helmet - that no one seems to ever bring up - is that the "frankenstein bolts" in the neck, seen in helmet reveals, are very clearly not present in the normal Vader helmet in every shot in ESB. And ESB is a movie that has a lot of Vader close-ups under various lighting conditions, and his neck has no "bolts".

The bolts aren't hugely visible on this figure, but they can be seen under most lighting. I really like my Hurricane ESB custom Vader helmet, but he also did the same - it has the bolts and I see them most of the time I look at the figure.

Holy ****! That comparison pic finally made it click for me why I dislike this new HT facemask so much! The small nose and tall mouth remind me too much of this . . .

You can also see the shape of the eyes, though again - slightly different angles.

Even funnier is how the chest box is integrated into the under suit just like the "esb" figure.

Esb figure box isn't integrated, it's got the reins and sits by velcro so you can adjust it, but everything on the figure costume (save the @#$% helmet :lol ) is very tight.

I didn't realize the box was also attached by velcro -- it's so tight that I didn't want to damage the suit when I did my initial futz. Good to know.

Unless there are different versions of this figure's suit and chest box, I can tell you for certain that the chest box is indeed attached/integrated into the suit, and not just by velcro. I just got my parted-out chest box in the mail today, and you can see that it is pegged to a plate behind the suit. Adjusting it seems pretty much out of the question without breaking it apart. The velcro section is presumably for the shoulder armor since it's sewn in above the chest box.

I really wish it was velcro, though, since I hate the two folded sections of the vest next to both sides of the chest box. Pretty sure the undersuit in ESB didn't have those, or they at least weren't as noticeable.

I think the "bolts" were only on the helmet during the reveal scene. The rest of the film had different helmets without them.

I added some thin foam material under his suit to pad out his torso a bit. Also trimmed down the sides of the torso so that his arms can go closer in

Might not show in this pic, but I can tell in person

Hey guys!! Check out my review for Hot Toys Darth Vader Empire Strikes Back! Let me know what you guys think. Personally I love it!

Nice review. From some of those higher angles the mask actually seems to work pretty well, as long as I think of it as being a more stylized Vader.

thanks davejames!! Really appreciate it. I'm not too good with movie accuracy in star wars but I really didn't see a problem with the helmet. If anything I thought it was kinda annoying everytime i tried to pose vader the dome would fly off pretty easily. Thanks for checking out my review.. next up Royal Guard which should be in after labor day.

Wow, that's totally nuts.

How does it compare to the SSC DX chestbox size-wise?

I have the regular SSC Vader, not the DX, but I think the chest box is the same one for both. You can see in my pic below that the SSC box is smaller by about 1mm on each of the four sides. I prefer the HT size, as I've always found the SSC one to be a touch too small.

I also included the b&w ESB Vader photo (and blew up the chest box section) because it's the clearest shot I have of the lettering under the lights. You'll notice that HT used the actual ESB lettering, whereas SSC used the lettering from ROTJ (even though the rest of their chest box is styled more like ESB than ROTJ). The new HT box is a more accurate ESB one in just about every way, imo. I just wish it wasn't attached to the vest.

Do you have the pictures to show what you did on the body?

Sorry, I just kind of did it on a whim and didn't document anything. It was a pretty simple process

I just took a sanding dremel to the sides of the torso where it flares out(there's a sort of shell that forms the chest and sides). I had some of that thin foam material that electronics often come wrapped in(any kind of thin foam would work) and put a few layers over the stomach/chest and taped it down with electrical tape. Might have to play around with it to get a nice rounded shape
