Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Kristian Harloff is being vilified on Twitter for his review of Solo. He already knew it was coming at the time he wrote it:
Thought there is a lot of fun to be had with Solo but I was definitely disappointed. I’m sorry guys! But it seems like there are TONS who loved it. I’m only one opinion.

Then there's Petri Nemiroff:
There’s some fun to be had with #SoloAStarWarsStory. Ehrenreich was solid and really enjoyed Glover and Waller-Bridge as L3, but not convinced we needed a young Han Solo movie. Was really hoping for higher stakes, more energy and depth.

This review in particularly screams bubblegum flick. He's basically saying that the movie doesn't take itself seriously.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

All the Star Wars movies are bubblegum flicks of varying quality. I’m not saying we should settle for mediocrity, but only SW and ESB are generally considered classics/historically important, with everything afterwards varying from fan to fan.

Star Wars is not for Star Wars fans anymore. Lucasfilm is trying to target a different or wider audience. This inevitably leads to bubblegumism when you try to sell to people who aren't in your demographic.

Bubblegumism?

And here I thought there were no intellectuals on SSF. :lol

Yeah, like pop music. Catchy and dumbed down for the sake of maximizing short term profits. Typical corporate logic.

I would change that to "many former Star Wars fans are no longer Star Wars fans." Saying Star Wars is not for Star Wars fans when there are a ton of new and old Star Wars fans that love everything that has come out since TFA disproves the original statement.

Now I'm gonna have to give it to you straight. You drew First Blood. You cannot be a true SW fan and be ok with "destroying the foundations from which the franchise was built," as one Comissar put it.

Grace labels you a "Star Wars moderate." But you're probably willing to spend a lot more money on it than most of those who Lucasfilm is trying to appeal to.

Most moderates are not going decorate their homes with Sideshow and Hot Toys SW.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

That is all dependent on nostalgia. I grew up on PT, I enjoy the OT, but aside from ESB, they dont enter my top 3. It could class me as a different type of fan, but it does not make me any less of a fan. SW was only ever enjoyable for the characters. Stories and messages mattered little to me. If Solo can pull off good characterization, I'm sold.

Not sure what you're talking about with all of that first blood business (unless maybe you are trying to switch this to a Rambo thread) but once again...don't give a toss about anything that anyone on YouTube says...my views on the state of Star Wars are defined by how well the movies entertain me...the movies are currently entertaining me well so that makes me a big fan of them...that's how it works...case closed...YouTube nobodies be darned.
And if Star Wars "moderate" means you saw ROTJ on the big screen in 83 and every release on opening night since, have read all of the expanded Universe novels, all of the current canon novels, seen every episode of Clone Wars and Rebels and own all of the Blu Ray sets, have every Marvel Star Wars Trade Paperback and own every Dark Horse omnibus, have a dedicated Star Wars room in your home that yes has every Hot Toys Star Wars figure...then I guess "moderate" is as high as fandom goes...oh wait no..."True Fan" means...you hate Star Wars right?

Therein lies the long term problem for KK's SW. Unlike with the PT, I see zero evidence that people growing up with the current films are potential lifers. The teenage boys are more into other stuff. SW Barbie dolls somehow don't appeal to them. That's nature. Not nurture.

They might get Lando right but Alden's Solo is way off the mark. That much is clear already. Its bad. Really bad. Distracting. The voice. His look. How he carries himself. All that. Judging from the early reviews, its looking like that's something that viewers will just have to "tolerate" to be able to enjoy other aspects of the film.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

I am not the biggest fan of deciding who is the "biggest" fan or what constitutes being a "true" fan because it is all over the place...I think the one thing that we should all be able to agree with, however, is that "True" Star Wars fans want it to succeed...if one is hoping for it to fail...they are probably not a fan...that is not me passing judgement, it is just logical...

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

Kathleen Kennedy is not Stat Wars.

Nope...but she is in charge of it like it or not...and the success of this thing called Star Wars is contingent upon how successful she is at her job...you can do the rest of the math without my help from there...

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th, 2018)

And I'm arguing that the long term success of Star Wars depends on her failure as president of Lucasfilm. She can be replaced. You know that, right?
