Yeah, takes a bit of time. As I said you don't have to soak it, just wet your finger and dab it. Helps a bit.

I need to get around to customizing mine with pastels...

Hi - I'm a bit scared of getting this guy wet for fear of washing off or loosening the hair but the stuff under the chin on my figure really isn't budging the way I'd prefer. Looks like you're a bit braver, I'm curious, did you immerse the head and soak the hair or did you just apply water manually to local areas? Thanks!

Hey there, as @Craig Walker said, just apply where you need water to break up the product and go. I used a q-tip and my fingers to really get in there; chin and I suppose where you would define his "cheek bones" at. I also spread a bit through the forehead.

I can't speak for others, but Chewie was shedding while I did this. I used a small comb with a lot of teeth, but I had one good furball at the end once I had went through and broke up some of the product matted fur throughout the body. So just make sure to not be overzealous, especially on the face. Practice a bit on the body so you have a feel for what you're doing.

I don't know how much experience you have with hair, but a general rule for detangling is to begin at the bottom and work towards to root - slow, short motions, hold the fur near the root to keep it from yanking and pulling out as you move upwards. Like I said, practice a bit with the body so you know the feel. Work with your fingers to loosen product on the delicate areas on the face before you take the comb to it. Just dab/rub water on those spots until it begins to loosen.

BE PATIENT. Go a little bit at a time, wet thoroughly where needed. Note that it's a good idea to keep a few fresh paper towels to slightly dry out the areas as you work so you can assess your progress faster. Lastly, make sure he's completely dry before you put him in your shelf, if it's a relatively enclosed unit (i.e. detolf) You don't want to trap moisture!

I'll be honest, short of ripping hair out, there's not much you can do here that will make him look worse than he is out of the box. Any mod you make will improve it - but combing the chin out, "fluffing" his features, making smooth hair lines through the forehead, and isolating his moustache are areas I would focus on. Other good things are to loosen the forearm hair, and get the matting out of his thighs. The shoulders on mine had a particular amount of product, breaking that up helped smooth the transition from the "beard" to the body.

Here's the final result of an hour and some change worth of work. I don't even feel the need to add color, the blending and lightening seemed to happen as I combed out all the fur across the body.

Thanks for taking the time to put that together, some great detailed advice there. Sounds like it's just as well I've been cautious up to this point. I'd tried applying a small amount of water with my fingertips but the product wasn't really yielding, I'll give the qtip technique a go at the weekend. And also try to apply a little patience! Yeah thanks Dioramamaker. That's some solid advice there. I've done a bit to mine, but this shows what's possible when all that glue product is out. Really looks 100% better, and probably the best I've seen. Especially with minimal extra work, just a good combing !

The best way is to use a brush that brushes over the fur and doesn't separate it like a comb does.

A stiff flat headed paintbrush for example.

Yeah I think someone used a soft toothbrush on their Chewy and it worked well.

Absolutely. Here's the toothbrush treatment on my Chewie. He may still be a bit dark, but I was amazed at how much the color improved after removing most of the product/adhesive and brushing him out...

Just his comb, to work through the fur all over the body and face that was matted down with the product, and the toothbrush after to smooth and shape the direction of the fur. Special attention with the tip of the brush to pull the fur away from the eyes to open them up a bit.

The hair itself is remarkably posable and moves into just about any position or shape you desire. Easy to move his look back and forth between ANH Chewie and ROTJ Chewie, for instance.

The "Mighty Chewbacca".

I did some more work on him. I can't stop doing touch up work on him. He's a lot of fun to style and futz.

There really isn't much of a contest here between a futzed ANH Chewie and the TFA one. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to snag one - I expect the ANH one will dry up soon with people who waited to see the TFA outcome first.

Looks great, Chaka. Some of these painted pics are making it really tempting to do something with mine. If only I had talent in that department.

I have to agree with that. I do hope that everyone gets the figures they want, and enjoy them as they were hoping they would when they get them in hand.... but... and I'm very lenient, I'm not a customizer, and I cut figures a LOT of slack... but... even I wouldn't be happy with that TFA. No amount of futzing would make it look alright, in my opinion. I got one of the lighter ANH versions, and with simple futzing, it looks very much like Chewie. Not perfect for sure, but looks more like Chewie than ANH Han looks like Han. The TFA Chewie looks like the cowardly lion, and the color doesn't make it any better in my opinion.
