Same goes for Guardians of the Galaxy--Quill's mom dies, Drax's family is killed, Rocket is a lab rat, Gamora was heavily traumatized, but the result isn't a sad bastard movie like Man of Steel. Same goes for lots of Spidey, Justice League, X-Men, Teen Titans, Fantastic Four, etc. comics over the years. And can go for movies obviously. The "essence" of many comics is escapist fantasy. You need conflict of some kind for almost any decent story, but it doesn't have to be "grounded and realistic." Alan Moore's works are a great example of the real range you see in comics, going from Watchmen, V, and Killing Joke on one end of the spectrum, to Supreme and Tom Strong on the other. It's all there with the funny books. But I'm sure you know that, having a collection of all those European comics and whatnot.

Exactly, now you understand what I meant by "dark overtones".

You should try European comics instead of dismissing them you may find something you like.
Overall they offer a lot more genres than American ones.

What genres do they offer than American comics don't? I'm no defending one nor the other, I just think they were usually the same thing, plus american and european comics often have mixed talent.

Tourist, do you have a heart?
Why?
Because I didn't like your new favorite movie?

If you tell me you loved GOTG I say good for you, there's no accounting for taste.
If you tell me it's a good movie with a good script I beg to differ and I express it, no big deal.
I made some good points, some bad ones, a little bit of both... :wink1:
Anyway, all good things must come to an end and since I have nothing new to add and I'm not here to make enemies I'll leave to you guys to your love fest. :wave

You liked TWS right? Let's go hang out in that thread. :rock :duff

Superheroes are the bread and butter of American comics, not so in Europe, there's no dominant genre like that.
The French market alone is the same size, maybe even bigger than the US comic market (and France has almost 6 times less people).
You'll find a large variety of genres, history, adventure, comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, erotic, western, thriller, mystery, independent, journalistic etc...
Think of it more like movies with various genres and subjects than like US comics.
I've enjoyed both for many years. :wave

Japanese comics offer a **** ton more genres than American comics will ever have. If only reading comics was as popular here as it is in Japan.

That's true, but many genres in manga are weird af :lol

I know, I read comics from everywhere, in fact I'm reading the Incal right now.

But then again, nothing American comics can't offer, there are other genres other than superheroes, even if they're eclipsed by the sheer amount of superhero demand.

Appropriate username is appropriate.

Just finished seeing this for the second time, definitely didn’t hold up for me. I have to retract my statements from a few days ago, TWS was FAR better than this. Still an overall fun movie, but I probably won't be able to watch again, Cap on the other hand, I can watch everyday.

Where'd you get that info? Can't find it anywhere.

Yeah that one smells funny to me too, Manga selling better than comics, that I believe, it sells by the millions over there, but European comics being a bigger market? Let alone the French market itself? Of just European comics that is...

I've been doing some light reading on that and I can't find anything that slightly points in that direction.

I know right. It was great. And we already knew from Ronan's earlier interactions with Drax that he doesn't go straight for the kill.

Yeah, exactly, he was a very theatrical guy, "I'll bring justice yadayada".

And besides, how unfamiliar EVERYBODY is to human stupid behavior, "what's a raccoon?","Why would I put my finger on his throat?", Gamora not dancing, etc etc.

For being such a ballsy silly move, it's still within it's own logic.

Which one? :panic:

When he kills Korath? He says something referencing the finger on throat metaphor from earlier, but I don't remember clearly, I've only seen it once.
