This is wonderful news!

That being said, here is my Christmas Wish List for 2010:

Smaug statue. Make it big - damn the cost! :lol
Bilbo statue
Thranduil statue
Thorin statue
And while I don't need another Gandalf statue, I know there'll be a new one and I'll buy it.

I'm going to have to re-read the Hobbit now...I haven't read it in years.....so I can't remember all the characters/creatures etc.

It's alright by me if Weta does the statues. Their Narnia statues are beautiful.

A Beorn would be great. Probably in the middle of him changing into a bear.

And they are super cheap on the secondary market, makes it easier for us thrifty folds :lol

Took all about the thrift!!

But the "thrift" has to do with the cost of the license, does it not?
The Narnia stuff, while very nice, is almost free compared to the SSW stuff. Never seen any Narnia stuff in person, but looks just as good as SSW IMO. I mean, didnt Weta sculpt the SSW line?

While Narnia certainly has a following, its nothing like the Tolkien jauggernaut!! Which, to me, would indicate a pricey'r collectible.

What say you?

I'm completely stoked!! Fantastic xmas news - that and the fact Fabio Capello is the new England manager!!
PJ will have complete creative control and may even direct one or both...who knows. But creative control means - New Zealand, Howard Shore, Lee and Howe, Weta, the original cast.
PJ will write the script too I reckon, maybe with the new director if there will be one.
Casting rumours, location scouting, spy reports, Weta poly, the story on screen, the link from the Hobbit to LOTR, Dol Guldur........I'm giddy!!!!

I know its almost too much excitement to handle honestly. All the thoughts ideas and expectations are just insane.

I only have one Narnia piece, the Otmin statue and it is really beautifully made... but I think you are right the following is (deservedly) much stronger for LOTR.

Although it seems like the SS Weta stuff is all over the place in terms of secondary value. Some are super expensive and others not so much.

Yeah, if the ES is 1000 or less it seems to go up, sometimes drastically.

Otherwise, if youre patient, you can pick everything up for way less than retail, because they make too many of'em. (Other than RWOS)

But, again, thats good for people who would rather pay 190 for PF Lurtz, instead of 350.

Well I hope WETA makes new statues with SS. Can't wait to add NEW figures to my collection. Since WETA/LOTR ended theres has been alot of great stuff that came out, but I still feel SSWETA/LOTR is one of the greatest lines ever made. Great news.

One thing that has me worried is that I got hooked onto Tolkien because of The Hobbit, and how it was geared towards kids. That means, I'd like to see The Hobbit retain its childlike story-telling. They can transition the 2nd movie as a teenager growing into adulthood and put a more serious twist to it. That way, young kids could watch The Hobbit, and then the 2nd film can be ratcheted up to a Pg-13 rating. And then, LOTR can be the adult version.

If anyone wants a child to be hooked on The hobbit or LOTR, there's no better way than giving them the BOOKS. The movies should be for grown-up audiences IMHO

Why can't the movie be done in such a way that both children AND adults can appreciate it? It doesn't have to be menacing and filled with darkness and violence to entertain adults.

Of course not! I'm only suggesting that children should read the books first. My best memories are those when reading them. It is a completely different experience. They will have a long time to watch the movies but not so long to be children ;)

Well ummm... Middle-Earth was a PRETTY violent place... The Hobbit as a book was written originally for children but Tolkien had maintained in later years that he had preferred if it had been in tone like LOTR. Out of most of Tolkien's writing, The Hobbit is the odd one out. So I feel it is perfectly justified to make it in tone the same as LOTR. Screw the whole growing up into films (Hobbit to White Council to LOTR). Kids will watch it one after another on HD DVD anyway, so what's the point? Who wants Phantom Menace, anyone? :monkey4

I can understand parents wanting to share this with their kids, but what can I say, for selfish reasons and a more "accurate" portrayal of those historic events I want it dark and menacing. :D Maybe NLC can release a PG-rated version on DVD later. :D

Watching the EE of Fellowship, Two Towers and Return of the King in a row in one sitting was very cool. Now just imagine how cool it's going to be watching the Hobbit, the White Council, FotR, TT and RotK in a row in one day!!! :rock :wacky

I think Narnia did a nice balance of that... I think you could even add a bit more and still be mostly kid friendly. Still don't think it should be geared to the under 10 as much, we have the cartoon for that.

Oddly enough I think the sentiments expressed here are echoed in the thread I made a couple days ago. My eight year old son loves the LOTR. I think movies like this are necessary as they introduce kids to the reality of violence and that evil exists and targets whoever it wants.
Make them in the same tone as LOTR, kids can still enjoy them and as they get older they will begin to notice the subtext.

And to show just how exciting this news has been to the longtime JRRT fans - when I heard yesterday that Hobbit has now been confirmed, I started trying to remember which board it was I used to frequent to keep up on movie news when LOTR was being made/released. Most of the original message boards that I frequented in 1998 forward are long gone, but the last one I remember spending a lot of time at in 2004 was TheOneRing.com. It was, in fact, members of that Board who talked me into buying my first Sideshow WETA piece - the RWOS.

At any rate, I went back over there, found that of course they have a forum for the Hobbit movie, and lo and behold - there were people posting for the first time in several years, - like me - all coming back so that we could once again anticipate, argue and laugh while we wait for the Hobbit. Names I hadn't seen in ages. A community reuniting. It was great!
