For those who have both the Buffy PFs, which do you prefer? I'm really wanting to get one in the second hand market but just not sure which way to go. They're exactly the same sculpt and paint aside from the hair, right? I think I'm leaning toward the red pants version. I really don't like the look of the hair on the black dress buffy. It looks all matted and gross.

I only have the Red Pants, however, apart from the hair, the base sculpt/paint, etc is all the same.
I too didn't overly like the sculpt and paint of the Black Dress hair, plus when I got mine, that version was well and truely sold out, while I was able to pick up the Red Pants version, brand new at a local shop for a very good price.
In many way's, what would have been best would have been the Red Pants hair, on with the Black Dress, but can't win them all.
At the end of the day, I'm not sure you can totally go wrong either way and if you can get a good condition, Black Dress Ex or Reg cheap, then go for it. However, I'm not sure how easy it will be to even get a Red Pants version at a resonable price, where as the Black Dress Ex is likely to cost a bucket load, assuming you can even find one.
Best of luck in the search.

Thanks for your reply :) i think I will go with the red pants and just concentrate on getting one of them. The hair is just too poorly done for my liking on the black dress.

I used to have both but I returned the red pants due to bad quality problems, but to be honest, I probably would have gotten rid of it regardless. Neither is perfect. Both were early days with Sideshow's PF line, and in retrospect it shows, which is I think why the prices on these first PFs (including the SW IV Luke and Han pieces that launched the PF lines) have not appreciated much over retail and are still readily available and fairly affordable.

The black dress version is at least based on an actual promo, while Buffy never wore the red pants outfit. Obviously the black dress one has the pancake batter hair. Additional downsides to the red pants are the fit of the pants - horrible. Very bad fit, and the "pockets" are at the bottom of the buttocks. It was just very badly tailored. The poor paint, particularly dark caterpillar eyebrows, are more noticeable with the pony tail hair style. Lazy eye could be a problem with either.

Found some old photos. Here you go.

Of course, take it with a grain of salt. Close up pictures with flash will exaggerate the problems, and this is quite possibly a very poor example (why I returned it). Proper viewing distance and natural light do wonders for a non-articulated collectible.

I'll agree that the pants from the back can be a bit baggy. It's possible to pull and tug to flatten them out a bit more, but still not perfect. While the dress of course doesn't have that problem.
From the front viewing point of view, it's generally no where near that bad.
The eye brows are a bit full on, but then that's the same for all of them and anything viewed really that close up is going to have issues, especially with these early type PF's from sideshow.
Even so, I'm still fairly happy with mine, here's a really old photo of the one I have.

Thanks guys. Hmmm. It's a double edged sword. The black dress is kind of an original and iconic look but the clumpy pancake batter hair is off putting. The hair on the red pants version is better - the face looks better too but you say it's the same sculpt? The pants themselves look a bit average and the tight top tucked in looks funny with the belt lol. Both have pros and cons. I might get the red pants version and commission a new black sleeveless top to cover the top of the pants like the promo pics Lol

I think the Red Pants looks better, BUT I like the Black Dress more because it reminds me of S1 Buffy. I vote Black Dress.

I only have the red pants version but my votes goes for black dress Buffy because it's more iconic with season 1, which is my favorite season. I wish I could find a black dress Buffy at a decent price. I've actually put my Buffy collection on hold for now due to too many bills and such but have no fear, I will eventually start collecting again.

I don't because she it was a look she barely wore in the show, in fact never when it comes to that exact outfit as the PF was based on a season one promo and thats all.

For me red pants Buffy is more akin to how she looked the majority of the time, but even that has flaws as in the pants cut etc.

What did you ultimately go with, obsidian?

They both have good points to them. The alternate version can look nice with a repaint. :)
