Warner Bros. out of 'He-Man's' world
Studio had been developing pic with Joel Silver
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Warner Bros. and Mattel will be parting company on "Masters of the Universe," the live-action reinvention of the signature Mattel toy line that WB and producer Joel Silver have been developing since 2007.
Mattel and WB didn't see eye to eye over the direction of the project and made a mutual decision to let the option lapse this month. Story revolves around He-Man, a prince who becomes a warrior battling the evil Skeletor for control of his magical homeland.

Mattel will take back the property and set it up elsewhere. The expectation is that director John Stevenson ("Kung Fu Panda") will remain with the project, but not Silver, who is exclusive to WB.

As Disney's Marvel Entertainment acquisition and WB's overhaul of DC Comics and its movie output shows, branded properties are important commodities. The owners of those brands now have more direct involvement -- and higher expectations.

The situation is reminiscent of Paradox Entertainment's decision several years ago to decline an option renewal on the Robert E. Howard "Conan the Barbarian" franchise, after WB made numerous attempts to reinvent the franchise with major filmmakers. Paradox aligned with Avi Lerner's Millennium Films, with Marcus Nispel directing. That deal has strict progress-to-production stipulations.

Mattel, which still has "Hot Wheels" with WB and Silver Pictures, has become proactive in setting properties for films since aligning with CAA. Among the deals: one for Universal and Playtone to turn "Major Matt Mason" into a star vehicle for Tom Hanks, one with Paramount for "Max Steel" and one with Universal deal for a live-action musical to be based on a new toy line that aspires to add a fresh twist to monster lore, with "Hairspray" producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing... :(

Interesting news now...

Sony Acquiring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Source:Variety, The Hollywood Reporter September 23, 2009

Just weeks after the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe movie left Warner Bros. Pictures, Mattel is finalizing a deal with Columbia Pictures. Escape Artists will produce the project.

Sony and Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will now start developing the project from scratch. John Stevenson had been attached to direct but is no longer attached.

In the big screen adaptation of the signature Mattel toy line, He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

It sucks about Stevenson... I think he would've been able to do the franchise justice...
oh well...

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

Well...
there's new writers now, according to the Hollywood Reporter

https://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/04/masters-of-the-universe-screenwriters.html

April 11, 2010

'Masters of the Universe' screenwriters hired (exclusive)

Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, the duo who wrote the upcoming "Predators" reboot, have been brought aboard to pen "Masters of the Universe" for Columbia.

The studio picked up movie rights to the 1980s Mattel toy property in the fall, when Mattel and Warner Bros. parted ways after the sides couldn't agree on a creative vision.

The addition of the rising writers is the first major move on the property and signals the project is being rebuilt from the ground up. While at Warners, "Masters" went through several writers and in latter stages had John Stevenson, who co-helmed "Kung Fu Panda," attached to direct.

Getting the go-ahead to tackle any major toy-brand film can be tricky. Depending on the property, writers and directors need to get a thumbs-up from the studio, which then has to win approval from the toy company. In the case of "Masters," Mattel has story approval.

In their pitch, the scribes attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately.

The '80s show, "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," centered on blond warrior Prince Adam, who, after uttering the magic words "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power," turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies -- Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko -- defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who week after week attempted to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbues He-Man with his powers.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists are producing.

The Verve-repped Finch and Litvak made a splash last year with "Medieval," which jolted the spec market when it sold to New Regency for big bucks. That script scored the duo the coveted gig of writing the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Predators," helping the long-in-development sequel go from script to screen in just more than a year.

"Predators" opens July 9.

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

the script should be about this key that played music and this midget was the keeper of the key and the key opened a doorway to earth. they should hire that twat principal from back to the future to play a detective. that would be really cool.

Director Jon Chu Wants Dolph Lundgren to Cameo in Masters of the Universe
by Spencer Perry
March 18, 2013

Though there's no casting for the Masters of the Universe reboot, director Jon M. Chu is on the record as saying he wants Dolph Lundgren to cameo in the film

“I don’t know if Dolph Lundgren is around or what he’s doing but, yeah, I think that could be some fun if we could find a way. I hope he still has the loin cloth and the long hair and everything.”

Lundgren played He-Man in the original 1987 live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe and has continued to remain a presence in action films since.

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who transforms into a warrior called He-Man and becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor. The reboot is being written by Richard Wenk, no casting or release date have been announced.

I really hope they make this movie right... though judging by the new writer's credits, doesn't look all that great... :(
I had more faith on the previous writers... we shall see...

Still probably be another 5 years before there is any real production. :impatient:

Jon M. Chu Talks Masters of the Universe and His GI Joe Sequel
Source: Edward Douglas

Director Jon M. Chu really shocked G.I. Joe fans when he made the jump from the "Step Up" movies to directing G.I. Joe: Retaliation, a movie that won over may Joe fans disappointed by the previous movie, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, something helped by bringing in the likes of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Bruce Willis to lead a new team.

The movie was delayed from summer 2012 until March 2013 while it was converted into 3D, which one would think might create hesitation in a director to continue the series, but Chu has proven himself to be such a die-hard Joe fan that he signed on to direct the sequel earlier this year.

While that's still in the early stages of development, the filmmaker spoke with SuperHeroHype earlier today and talked a bit about another popular toy line and franchise that he's been actively working on developing, making a new movie based on Mattel's Masters of the Universe for Sony Pictures.

With a really bad 1987 movie having already been made, we asked Chu about his approach to a toy line that's not nearly as grounded in reality as G.I. Joe: Retaliation was and while talking about the work they've been doing, he mentioned that it's more likely that the "Joe" sequel will move forward first, depending on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's schedule.

"I think that what helps us is knowing what we do in 'Joe' and knowing that 'Masters' has to be very different and has to feel very different, but the script for 'Masters of the Universe' is what really hooked me," he said about the project. "I love 'Masters of the Universe,' but I didn't know necessarily how to make it into a movie until I read the script and thought, 'Oh my gosh, I totally see it. I get how this is going to shake it up, I get how this is different from any other thing,' and it got me really really excited. We're still working on that one and 'Joe' has momentum right now. The audience has been great and they want another one, so we're rushing to get that done and Dwayne has a certain time period so it may end up that 'Joe' goes first in all those things and I don't know if 'Masters of the Universe' will wait for me or where that's going to end up. But right now it's been great. We've been designing a ton of stuff for 'Masters of the Universe' as a really beautiful, grounded, honest world - that's the best way I can describe it. It's everything you want 'Masters of the Universe' to be in terms of the fantasy but not in a way theatrical crazy way. It is actually a gorgeous world that we're doing in the initial visual concepts that we've been making."

Now, it was probably a foregone conclusion that Hasbro and Paramount Pictures would want to bring back Johnson to play the role of Roadblock, but Chu backtracked when we asked him specifically about his return. (After all, few of the original cast from G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra made it to "Retaliation.")

"I can't confirm or deny the reports," he said coyly, "But yeah we're continuing and of course the Rock is our leader and much of what he displays is what G.I. Joe and what the future G.I. Joe will be, but we're trying to figure all that stuff out right now."

Seems to me that it's in development hell, not fully greenlit and chances are Chu won't do it if he starts doing G.I. Joe...

I am somewhat hopeful but the possibility of this being colossally screwed up seems so high.

If we ever get to see concept art, I might be a bit more hopeful.

@DeVonFranklin I am looking forward to the eventual Masters of the Universe/He-Man movie.. assuming of course, it happens ;)

@disneyrthanthou It will happen and it will be great. Terry Rossio is working on the script, he's doing an amazing job!

They should just do an animated movie, MOTU is too goofy a concept to do properly in live action. Frank Langella chewing the scenery like a t-rex is the only thing that makes the first movie watchable.
