my theory on it's failure was it was a terrible movie. I wanted to leave halfway through it, but stayed for my friends. I'm just surprised that it being a Disney film and all the marketing/hype, it didn't do better. It's kind of the Lone Ranger.

I loved the movie, it had a "matinee" feel to it. It was a grand adventure that nobody wanted to watch.

It was kinda similar to "Lone Ranger" in tone and style. They are both "happy-go-lucky" light hearted adventures.

People want dark and brooding. That is kinda sad too.

But no figures? Does anyone know why?

I actually haven't even seen the movie, but. . .

You thought this movie had lots of marketing and hype? I thought the consensus was that Disney wrote this off before it started, and didn't even bother giving it the full marketing treatment. Hence, no merchandise.

It was faithful to Edgar Rice Burrough's book which was written almost 100 years ago. You have to appreciate it for its naivete for being a sci-fi fantasy from the point-of-view of turn-of-the-century narrative.

Anyone for some maquettes?

Those are by LegacyFX, and 3D printed in this case, course Legacy do a lot of stuff for Sideshow but sadly in the case of John Carter I suspect the market isn't larger enough for these to be anything but one-offs.

These are BEAUTIFUL! Yeah, would have been pretty neat. How come they were never made? Any more pics?

and the dumbest mistake of all, just calling it JOHN CARTER- biggest WTF decision in recent movie history...

At first I didn't like that the film was just John Carter, but at the end when the "of Mars" appeared I got why. In the beginning he was John Carter of Earth, it wasn't till the end of the film that he truly became John Carter of Mars. Either way, I love this movie. In my opinion one of the most underrated sci-fi/fantasy films of all time.

Aside from the planet being Mars (and even that is being relative in nature considering it could have been Mars of 1 billion years ago) I don't think there's anything naive about it.

I thoroughly enjoyed John Carter and while I wouldn't say it was the most underrated sci-fu/fantasy films of all time, I will say that IMO it was the most underrated movie of 2012. :peace

I liked it too, but it totally bastardized the first few books. Not sure why they couldn't just follow the first book. They really should have shot this as 2 movies and done the first two books. They could have gotten more bang for their bucks out of it. And I still don't trust Disney's accounting practices.

Well they are animators maquettes, so made for the VFX guys, however they could easily form the basis of actual production maquettes if there was a market, but lets face it the market would be pretty niche for John Carter.

Give it 10 years and you'll be able to download something like that and 3D print it yourself in colour I imagine though.
