Re: Man of Steel

I like Alan Silvestri's CAPTAIN AMERICA score and parts of AVENGERS a lot. But I think the themes fall just shy of that instantly iconic, timeless quality.

The Cap score is another good one but I kind of like the Thor score more. The Avengers score is ok it's got some good parts but is mostly average. One score I downloaded recently that I love is the score for Lincoln. That is an amazing score.

Re: Man of Steel

Alan Silvestri is my favorite composer. His themes might not always be iconic...but at least he does themes. His music always gets me pumped.

I even like GI JOE's soundtrack

Re: Man of Steel

The thing with anthems is directors and editors tend to create montage scenes to feature the music, such as Keaton driving the Batmobile for about a minute just to give the Batman march a chance to play.

Yo, Hans Zimmer I'm really happy for you and imma let you finish but "Descent into Mystery" is the best Batman track theme of all time. OF ALL TIME.

I agree. And I double dare ya to play it while driving in your car and attempt to stay anywhere near the speed limit.

A. you made me want to go drive over a pile of leaves.

B. tell me you don't hear the batmobile engine exhaust as soon as the song ends.

Re: Man of Steel

Hell, every time I hop into a car and drive around I feel like I'm Batman and I hear that track. I have the warnings and tickets to prove it. :lol

For a scene as simple and silent as Batman driving Vale to his lair and Vicki trying to to get a good look at his features (with Batman being distantly silent and shining the light in her eyes) it sure has an epic, operatic feel to it.

It literally has little happening but has a huge weight to it.

Compare that to Batman Begins with the score blasting, Batman yelling at the top of his lungs, "RAAAAAAAAAAAAACHEL" and Katie Holmes spazzing out and it just doesn't feel quite the same or as amazing.

Re: Man of Steel

After 30 plus years of Superman being associated with JW score, it's nice having something different.

I dunno. I was quite happy to continue associating the Williams music with Superman and Superman with the Williams music. It never got old and at this point I'm not sure it ever will. I like Zimmers score but what Williams did is just unbelievable (in the good way). I don't think theres ever been a piece of music more perfect for a character that is at the same time endlessly enjoyable to listen to on its own.

It's why Michael Giacchino is the closest thing we have to John Williams.

If thats because of his Star Trek theme I aint impressed. Even when I was positive-minded about the rebooted Trek-verse I didn't like that music.

Re: Man of Steel

John William's theme is THE definitive Superman theme. That's like saying we've had 30+ years of his Star Wars theme and it's time for something different. You can't make a Star Wars movie without Williams theme or it isn't Star Wars.

Same with the Bond theme.

BB training montage and score
TDK ending montage
TDKR 'the climb'

Perfect audio/visual moments that personify why I love Zimmer/JNH's score so much.

Elfman's theme is great and it works perfectly for the tone of the Burton films.

But I like the tone and feel of the Nolan/Zimmer combo a lot more.
Different strokes.

As for MoS soundtrack - not seen the film yet (not out here yet till next week), but have been listening to the soundtrack since yesterday. Completely different feel to JW's work but I love Zimmer's theme. The use of pedal steel guitars is pretty ingenious. Look fwd to seeing how it all fits in context.

Re: Man of Steel

Don't get me wrong a-dev, JW Superman soundtrack is played a whole lot in my house, I installed a crap load of speakers for a reason.

If I could only own one Superman movie soundtrack hands down it would be JW.

But thankfully most of us on here won't ever have to choose one over the other.

Life is made even more special with variety.

Re: Man of Steel

I don't think anyone here is saying that. I just wish Zimmer,...you know, put some effort into it.

:lecture:lecture:lecture

I think I could have gotten into MOS more if it had kept the Williams music much like every iteration of Bond keeps the Bond theme. I'm not convinced of what people are saying that it just wouldn't fit. Standard action music for the battle sequences and the Williams theme coming in for the triumphal Superman moments. John Ottman did a superb job with that on Superman Returns.

Star Wars =/= Superman

Tomorrow I'm coming over to your house and putting a gun to your head and making you choose.
