Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

IF Brad Bird were involved it would explain why we haven't seen him attached to anything since Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol. That was last summer.

And again, that's just a rumor.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Bird would be good.
The only thing we can be sure about at this point is that Disney will make a pic that partially appeals to a young Star Wars (5 year old) pyjama audience. There is no way in hell they are going to do anything which eliminates that portion of their market. So anyone with dreams of KOTOR or anything similar, just forget it. I hope they manage to get it to work on multiple levels though which Lucas failed to do with the prequels, which I'm still fond of but couldn't defend.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Most of the PIXAR films have accomplished that. I agree it's unlikely Disney is going to make a dark and gritty Star Wars film, especially it's first.

I was thinking about the old ILM model shop. They were spun off back in 2006 and became Kerner Optical. Unfortunately the demand for practical effects and model work in films has dropped to the point Kerner went out of business in 2010. It's too bad this deal didn't happen back when the model shop could have been saved.

Marvel made themselves an attactive buyout. Now they have even more resources. The same is true of Lucasfilm.

When Disney purchased PIXAR there were people who felt it would be ruined.

Some people just love to hate Disney.

Saw this on Facebook from Timothy Zahn

Some words from SW author, and Mercs Honorary Member Timothy Zahn on the LFL buyout, and EPVII.
You go away for a weekend...

We got home from Tampa and Necronomicon late last night (after a full day of flying) to the stunning news of the Disney/Lucasfilm deal. It's going to take a little time to process my thoughts, but I'll try to post some comments here later today.

But to answer a few of the most immediate questions:

1. No, I haven't been contacted by either Disney or LFL.
2. There's no indication that anything from the Thrawn Trilogy (or any other EU book/comic will be part of the new movies.
3. There's also no indication that they *won't* make an appearance. Right now, we really have nothing on any of those details.
4. If Disney *did* want to use anything from the EU, they wouldn't need the author's approval or permission to do so. Everything that's been written under the Star Wars logo is LFL properly (as is only right and proper), and they can do with it as they please.
5. If by some miracle Disney *does* want my input on the project, I *will* be on the next flight to California. Heck, I'll charter a plane if I have to.

That's all for now. More thoughts when my brain wakes up a bit.

Thanks for posting that. :duff

I agree, BUT the good thing about star wars is that it inherently appeals to 5 year old kids (hell, my 3 year old daughter LOVES ESB), without needing to 'water it down' so to speak. And there's also the 5+ audience to consider, and (IMO) there's no way they're going to eliminate that portion of the market by releasing a PG Star Wars movie.

They could do KOTOR just fine, there's nothing about it that wouldn't work for a young audience. I think they will end up going to that era for something at some point. Not for Episodes 7-9 though of course. I could also see maybe a one-off movie for Dawn of the Jedi maybe.

I think a lot of the model builders from there made a new studio. Sounds like though the studio closed from mismanagement according to wikipedia.

I don't require a SW film to be any darker than ESB. Make the humor a bit more mature than it was in the PT, get a director who cares about actors and acting, a decent writer and we're good.

This makes me so happy. I thought iu was the ONLY person alive who didn't feel that

" if a movie isn't so dark and gritty that i need a flashlight and a siv to get through the opening credits. if it's not so dark and moody that it poops bats, then it's for kids, and is absolute garbage"

Avengers was a disney movie. Iron man 3 is going to be a disney movie
The First pirates movie is a disney movie.

I loved all of those movies.

Look at the film pedigree of the woman george is leaving in charge.
I love everything on that list. I have no concerns at all, right now.

That might change, we will see.

ok... i take it back, i only have one concern.
I'm a HUGE fan of the EU. MY ONLY concern for the new films is that they take FROM the eu, and incorporate it, instead of crapping all over it, and ignoring it completely. CLone wars, and even the PT have done this to some extent, and done a pretty good job of it. Coruscaunt, for example, started out in Zhan's books.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

EU =/= cannon though, and much of it already contradicts itself anyway. That's gonna be the biggest hurdle for you EU nuts to jump.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Yeah, that's why I hope they have it take place like a 100 years after ROTJ, that way they don't have to ruin the EU or try and deal with recasting the characters, it would also give them the opportunity to adapt some of the EU stuff for their own movies or shows or whatever without trying to make them make sense as a part of the main movie series.

I agree, it hits the perfect balance, but that was a long long time ago.
I don't think a studio today would release something as dark as Empire.

Too risky. Things have changed since the OT. Studios just don't take risks anymore, in fact they didn't back then Lucas put up his own cash for it.

And regarding people mentioning EU, they have already said it wouldn't be. It is a new story, not based on anything previously released.
:dunno

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

It doesn't even have to be as dark as ESB. Just cut out the ****ing slapstick comedy which plagued even ROTS. You can go light while not pandering to toddlers.

Yeah, it's a fine line I guess. But you just know how much another Jar jar will net Bob Iger. It's all about the $ with him.

Hopefully the long term value of the property and Kennedy will stop any crazy kiddie pandering.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

someone else mentioned.. remember.. who ever directs the movies, will be a star wars fan... not GL himself how he sees it.. for that reason... Im sure it will be much better the the sequels !! We wont have dummies like Jar Jar.. or something stupid like a flying R2 suddenly..

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

Oh I'm almost assuming by default that its gonna be better than the prequels.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

The biggest "wait and see" at this point is director and cast. As long as it doesn't go to Stephen Sommers or Roland Emmerich and feature Channing Tatum, Will Smith, or Shia Lebouf then they should have a pretty easy shot at making the new movie at least as good as ROTJ. Anything better would just be gravy IMO.

I actually am a bit apprehensive that some "deal breaking" d-bag like the five I mentioned above will somehow worm his way into a major role in front of or behind the cameras. I pray that doesn't happen.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII (2015) Discussion Thread

I just read about Lucas giving most of the cash to charity, thats just amazing.

And I thought this was pretty cool..

“You know, when I first did this, it was four trilogies,” Mark Hamill recalled in 2004, speaking of their conversation in 1976. “Twelve movies! Out on the desert, any time between setups… lots of free time. And George was talking about this whole thing… ‘Um, how’d you like to be in Episode IX?’ ‘When is that going to be?’ ‘2011.’ […] I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do?’ He said, ‘You’ll just be like a cameo. You’ll be like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope.’”

Yeah, being a HUGE fan of the Republic Commando novels, I was disappointed that Clone Wars changed up the "warrior tribe" into a bunch of hippies, but it is what it is and it's Lucas' sandbox (or was) and we're all allowed to play in it. But yeah, I wish they'd go way before or after, like Old Republic or Legacy as I mentioned earlier, but along the same lines, I can see why they'd want some familiarity beyond troopers, Jedi and Sith to get people on board for their version of SW. I just really hope they don't recast anybody if they're going that route.
