Is anyone here doing the MOTU Create-A-Contest???

After the contest deadline or when they announce the winner..I'd love to see what everyone submitted
i can't draw. and i'd also be pissed if my charactor got beat out by another comic book style charactor.

i still like my Shark man idea. somebody feel free to use it if you like. i won't cry "Rip-off" or anything. i also think a Rat man would be cool too.

I would enter Battle Pigeon but as I am not in the US, I cannot. :(

Battle Pigeon (Evolved version) would defeat all contenders.

Battle Pigeon (Devolved version)

BATTLE PIGEON
Heroic fighting courier
Real Name: Colum-Badd
From the Red Stone rooftops of a distant land and when not seducing the local females with his mighty love, Colum-Badd often visits Eternia to help improve communications between it's many native cultures and races.
Each scroll the mighty avian warrior carries contains the synopsis of each He-man.org Podcast, an ancient periodical recording of four wise Terrans that provide comfort to the many races of Eternia and indeed the Universe.
Battle Pigeon journeys through dangerous skies to deliver vital Podcasts to the good people of Eternia!

Bought! I would actually want that character..nice Eamon!

I had two ideas, but I'm busy enough with other art projects to draw them.

Bear-Bones
Black bear warrior of the north, covered in bone armor and battle scars. Is the leader of a band warriors who fights the thawing undead/skeleton horde. His only concern is winning against the horde, everything else is secondary.

Wolf-Hyde
Mean grey timber wolf face (open mouth), king greyskull cape, beast-man shoulder pads, large battle axe, new chest armor.
Eternian Palace Guard Private James, jealous of everybody else he knows having powers of some kind, creates a potion that allows him to change into a wolf. Unfortunately the effects last longer each time he used the potion, so he is at risk of becoming his wolf alter-ego permanently every time he changes.

Awesome! I just entered it for you. Let's see what happens. :clap

J/K, that is a damn good design and uses existing parts well.

Those both sound pretty Cool

A MOTU Bear and Wolf character sound long overdue

I might sound like a jackass but I don't do unpaid work.

It's a contest... :dunno

It's not an ego thing. It's just that it's my job. It would be like asking a brick layer to build a wall for free. There's this BS with artists (including writers, designers, etc) where people expect you to work for free and you're sort of trained going into the field to work for free. There's this whole "for your portfolio" mindset you're hammered into and a lot of companies take advantage of young artists.

There's fortunately also a lot of people in the industry writing about it to try to inform young designers of their right to request pay for work. In Dreams With Teeth Harlan Elison also does a pretty good tirade on the whole phenomenon.

For me it does hurt trying. That's time I could have spent working on something else for actual pay. This may also sound odd, but I only have a limited amount of creativity and sort of "use it up' when working. So it's not just the time, but the sap on my creative institution.

I'm also at a place in my life where if I'm working, I HAVE to get paid. I recently had to pass up a conceptual design gig on a low budget horror film just because they couldn't pay me what I needed to get paid for the time. It sucked because I really wanted to work on the project but the time/money equation meant I wasn't going to be able to pay my bills.

I'm not saying doing a design for this contest would cause me to fall into bankruptcy or anything. What it comes down to is that I just simply do not work for free anymore. It's partly because of actual real-world financial reasons and partly because of personal ideals and beliefs on the subject.

You know this is a contest for fans don't you? It's not a "job"... it's for fun, nobody is forcing you to do it, so why you feel you'd be being exploited is beyond me...
Most people entering the contest don't even have artistic skills... you're not being judged on that anyway, so if you cant to make a doodle that takes 5 minutes, you can do that, you know?

I'm a designer and I don't do sketches or concepts for free either, but this contest has nothing to do with my professional career... if you really think so, I believe you have the wrong idea of what a toy concept contest is all about... you're not required to come up with detailing, engineering or production plans... :lol

If you're not a professional or what to be a professional than I guess it's worthwhile.

I'd enter it for you If you like Eamon

Maybe if there was also like a $10k prize or something it might be kind of worth it, but even that you only get that if you win so you're still doing what basically amounts to spec-work which I stopped doing back in my early 20s (30 now).

$10k isn't even that much. I can't believe they're not offering any cash prize to the winner. Although I think there's some legal hoops you have to jump through to offer cash prizes so that might be part of it… but still.

Not to mention that all submissions become the property of Mattel when they're submitted so whether it wins or not, it doesn't mean they want use it later and if they do you get "0". I have an idea, and I do think it’s a good one. I just don’t want to see it a year from now and someone else get the credit.

(Me) “Hey, that figure was my idea.” :)

(Other person) “Sure, sure it was!” :cuckoo:
