I think I would still prefer Sideshow to handle the humans and Weta can do some of the others.

Creatures are what Weta do, so it'd be great for Sideshow to get the 1/6 scale statues, and Weta to get maybe the creatures in a scale that would be bigger than the 'human' statues...... but i guess it'll be all in one. Again, as Weta are making the creatures for the film it'd be cool for them to do the collectibles for things they actually make..... so.... let the race begin!

Weta actually did a pretty nice job with most their human sculpts, i.e Superman Returns and King Kong statues. I am pretty sure they could do as good a job if not better than sideshow when it comes to human likeness.

No, don't start that up!! Both companies have excellent sculptors who would do justice to any Middle-Earth collectible line. We don't want to start arguments!

Should be fun to watch and then collect either way. :hi5:

I'd say it's not about 'topping' anything. It's about expanding and adding to the world of LOTR collecting. I look at the collaboration between Sideshow and WETA and all the original releases as the classic days and they hold a very special charm of their own. This new line will have it's own moments of sheer brilliance I don't doubt and maybe one day they too will be re-invented in another format and these will become part of the 'silver age' of LOTR collectables :peace

Very wise words Dave, I agree with you all the way :hi5:

SSW or SS both companies know how to do LOTR and treat it with love. That is what makes us winners. :rock

Sideshow has this awesome maquette line starting up, The Hobbit films are finally starting to get underway, and now rumors are beginning to swirl that the LOTR EE will be released on Blu-Ray this year.

Yeah, its a great time to be a ringer (again). Every day is really but its nice that it will be out again for all to see and hopefully more folk will come in and find out why so many of us love Middle Earth.

Because of the quality of the sculptors Sideshow has, i don't know who i want more to get The Hobbit statue licence. Maybe Weta could do environments, Gentle Giant could do busts, and Sideshow could do PF's..... but who gets the statues?? I don't think i'd mind either way, i think Weta's sculptors have improved over the years and their likenesses would be better than *some* of their previous attempts like Aragorn and Legolas...

I think in the case of the PF's and environments these licences are no-brainers. SS's expertise when it comes to mixed mediums is the result of years of experience gained by working within this format and not only do I think SS should continue with this licence, I don't even think Weta would consider applying for it. The same could be said in reverse concerning the environments. Weta's been doing a great job on these for years, and I don't see SS even attempting to go after that licence.

As for 1/6 scale statues and 1/4 scale busts, I would definitely feel more comfortable having SS do the statues esp. considering the fantastic job they have done on the maquettes so far. And as long as Trevor is working for SS I just don't see my opinion changing. As for the busts I don't have any concerns with either company getting that licence. IMO Weta's 1/4 scale likenesses were superior to their 1/6 scale likenesses and many of their human characters, such as GTW, Theoden, and Grima were exceptional.

:goodpost:

I would certainly add 1/4 GTG bust along with Theoden,Grima and GTW.Perfect sculpts imho.Epic.

If we are talking likenesses, then I would have to put Hot Toys into the pot.:yess:
I know they don't do Statues or Busts :(, but for me the likenesses of their action figures are second to none :clap.
Now if there was a company that could produce likenesses to the same standard as Hot Toys (in Statue and/or Bust form),
they would be well worth considering for the LORT/The Hobbit licence IMHO.:yess:

Having said that, SS's PFs & Maquettes and Weta's environments rock :rock

That is very true, their likensses are amazing, but they only work with plastics, correct?

I received my Maleficent PF from the Disney line yesterday and it had a 2011 SS calendar in the box. Looking at the Gollum PF again I'm kind of regretting not placing an order for it.

The PF will certainly be the definitive Gollum piece from SS but I hope they will make him in the maquette line at some point. They've pretty much confirmed that we'll be seeing Hobbits on the same base; one would assume Merry and Pippin together on one and Sam and Frodo on another. I wonder how they would tackle a Gollum maquette. Would they dare do something different and make a piece with both Gollum and Smeagol on the same base? Do you think they could make that work?

I think SS will do separate Gollum and Smeagol statues...I don't see it working any other way.

Like many other people, I have been re-thinking my collecting considerably since the announcement of this new line, and especially since the "12 days" picture.

I have decided, like sideshow, to "go back to my roots", and focus on collecting just LOTR, like I used to. I have dabbled with 12" figs and HT and other bits and pieces, but LOTR/ Tolkien is my one love. And especially with Hobbit-mania gathering momentum, things can only get better.

Since I recently ordered (on flex) the GTG PF, it did cross my mind to just have a centrepiece, and forget about the maquette line, maybe even grab a few other PFs. However I simply don't have the space for that, and the maquettes fit my requirements perfectly.

To that end, I will keep my GTG PF order, as I think he is stunning, but collect the maquettes from now on. Currently I have all 3 on order, and I am anxiously awaiting Aragorn, but I have decided to cancel the Gandalf maquette. I'm still not 100% sold on the pose, and with the PF, that can be my GTG representation in my collection. I probably won't be buying more than 1 of the same character (just not for me), but I believe GTG/GTW are different enough to warrant purchases. So I will keep the PF, and wait for GTW in the maquette line.

One question, do you guys think SS's licence will extend to The Hobbit as well? My only worry is that if this line is a success :)pray:) and makes it to The Hobbit, will any future Hobbit statues have the same bases etc to keep uniformity? Things like that seem to matter to me.

Anyway, bring on the maquettes!! :rock:rock

I'm sure Sideshow will make some stuff for The Hobbit. Hopefully more maquettes but could be PF's as well.

What are the chances of Sideshow making all the members of the Hobbit? I know I would like to have complete Hobbit group, Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves. But knowing sideshow, who knows.

As most of my collection is SSW, i wouldn't mind if Weta did the statues, then they'd have the same bases and they'd keep uniformity for the people who have their LOTR collection! As they're working on the film, i wonder if they have a better chance of doing the collectibles? Sideshow can do the PF's!

However, if Sideshow do the statues, and put them on the same bases, that'd only make me want the LOTR maquettes more!

I would say pretty high. Assuming the hype of the movie helps bring in enough fans who I would call bandwagon fans. So if the sales are good enough as with this line things will keep coming. :lecture
