Why don't they restore stonehenge and the pyramids?

Supposedly the three great pyramids line up with Orion's belt in the constellation of Orion.

Kinda neat isn't it. As I recall the two smaller pyramids that are further away also align with a couple other points on Orion. Likewise (iirc) one of the shafts lines up with Polaris.

A 3D recreation of some of these monuments would be cool. While they're at it maybe they could recreate some other great monuments such as the Pharos Lighthouse.

They don't want to tamper with history - If the castle was destroyed in a battle, they want to preserve history as it was. Further, if the castle was merely destroyed due to villages stealing bricks, or simple corrosion, although they could restore it, they don't know EXACTLY what it looked like back then, all they can do is speculate.

Again, there is a distinction between antiquity and modern history. If something was damaged in a war during the middle ages they'd probably not fix it, but if it was damaged during WWII, they'd probably fix it.

Wasn't the limestone exterior of the pyramids swiped somewhat recently? Like the last 100 years or something?
I recall seeing on TV that the limestone was scavenged for other uses.

I could be wrong......

I recently read a historical novel set during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign and the limestone exterior was gone then. So assuming that to be accurate it's been at least 200 or so years. So it could be pretty recently before that.

But one thing you might be interested in... a group recently built a replica of Stonehenge (not using real stone, but something lighter they could shape) and by doing so learned a lot about how it would have worked. It was really fascinating.

I've seen a full size Stonehenge replica in Maryhill, Washington, USA. Built in 1918. I dunno, I kinda like the original ruined Stonehenge better.

If they restored it it work be back in working condition and we'd have a flood of aliens telling us what to do and enslaving us to build more of their alien sign post beacons. Then again I haven't been probed in a while. Enslavement does have its benefits.

My understanding (which is spotty since it was a class in 1998 :lol) was that after the Egyptian culture declined the pyramids and other places were stripped of valuables over the years.

And according to Wikipedia:

At completion, the Great Pyramid was surfaced by white 'casing stones' – slant-faced, but flat-topped, blocks of highly polished white limestone. Visibly all that remains is the underlying step-pyramid core structure seen today. In AD 1301, a massive earthquake loosened many of the outer casing stones, which were then carted away by Bahri Sultan An-Nasir Nasir-ad-Din al-Hasan in 1356 in order to build mosques and fortresses in nearby Cairo.

So its been awhile since they were white and shiny... and I imagine the gold top was lost a lot sooner.

I know Athens is rebuilding the Acropolis including the Parthenon. They've using as much of the original marble blocks as possible and adding some replacement marble.

Personally, I don't mind either the Parthenon or the Pyramids being restored. FAR worse things have been done to these buildings. I also think the people who built them would've wanted them to have been preserved as pristine as possible.
BTW, they're is a full scale replica of the Parthenon in Nashville Tennessee. I only got to see it from afar when I was living there, really wish I went on a tour of it now, someday I'll revisit and check it out.
Stonehenge is a different situation, it's a more simple structure that requires completely new stones in some cases making much of it consist of new stones. I'd prefer Stonehenge kept the way it is.
