WB, Joel Silver shaping He-Man film
John Stevenson to direct live action 'Masters'
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver set "Kung Fu Panda" co-director John Stevenson to make his live action directing debut on "Masters of the Universe," a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line.
He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures banner. Mattel's Barry Waldo will be executive producer.

WB acquired the property in 2007, and Justin Marks wrote the first draft of the script based on a story he developed with Neil Ellice. .

The Mattel property became iconic by way of the 1980s cartoon series "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," and the property was previously turned into a campy flop by Cannon Films in 1987, with Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and "Frost/Nixon" star Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor.

The film project is a big priority for Mattel, which licenses a high-end line of He-Man toys that are popular with hardcore collectors. Hollywood has become a magnet for branded toy-line properties, as DreamWorks and Paramount ready a June 26 release for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and Paramount preps for an Aug. 7 release on "G.I. Joe," both of which began as toy lines that became hit animated series.

Stevenson said the first film came to mind when he was asked to consider the job, and the impression wasn't a good one. He changed his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.

"There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Waldo said that Stevenson's vision to elevate the material matched with Mattel's desire to see He-Man become a big studio film. Mattel has also brought its "Hot Wheels" film to WB and Silver.

"John had such passion that we found ourselves trying to running to catch up with his vision," Waldo said.

Stevenson has also worked on "Shrek" and "Shrek 2," "Madagascar," and "James and the Giant Peach," and began his career working for Jim Henson on projects that included "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth."

At least it sounds like he's got some background in sci-fi/fantasy locales and creatures.

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

Should be good, I even enjoyed the last one. How many years has it taken for Skeletor to finally come back :lol

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

Yeah but the first had a real messed up story to begin with and I mean REAL weak! About as bad a story as you could opt for, this new idea will be a home run I have no doubt.

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

Apparantly the director based the story on Jack Kirby's New Gods as opposed to the Masters of the Universe toy line/cartoon. Which didn't help.

But it could've been worse, it could've been a Joel Schumacher film :lol

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

grew up watchin' the cartoon, I am most definately looking forward to this one! :chew

Re: New He-Man movie has a director!!

I really don't see how a He-man live action could work unless it's a completely self aware campy send up of the cartoon.

Conan worked quite fine and it is known that the He-Man figure line in the 80's was based on Conan. If they go with that look and feel the film will do very well.

And the He-Man Movie Is Back to Being F@#$ed
Posted at 3:12 PM May 13, 2009

Back when the new Masters of the Universe movie was first announced, screenwriter Justin Marks has hired to write a script. This script was seen by nerds in places like Latino Review, who gushed about its awesomeness, and how Marks' just "got" He-Man, both the character and the franchise. Which is why it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures have thrown that script in the trash and hired some guy named Evan Daugherty to write a new one.

If you haven't heard of Daugherty, chances are you aren't related to him. The only thing he has done has won some screenwriting contest called "Script Pimp" for an unproduced screenplay called Shrapnel. Now, before you say something about giving Daugherty the benefit of the doubt, listen to the Hollywood Reporter:
Landing "Grayskull" is a huge coup for Daugherty, whose only writing credit is the unproduced screenplay "Shrapnel." ... He was living at his parents' home at the time and paying bills by doing freelance video editing.
...uh-huh. But that's not even the upsetting part:
Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.
Ah yes! The evil sorcerer Skeletor hates magic, and thus uses robots -- instead of, you know, all his evil henchmen, to get rid of that heroic astronaut He-Man. Maybe instead of the power sword, He-Man can get a magic gun, and the Wind Raider can be a jive-talking Transformer, and then we can have Dane Cook as Gwildor, and GODAMN MUTHER^^^^ING ^^^^ING ^^^^BALLS I WILL ^^^^ YOUR ^^^^ING FACES OFF GAH ARAR KILL RGHHHD2 R2TCC#@R#$ ^#^&#& %&$^*$*$*$^***(^

Uhhh, yeah. About that. The Silverhawks are now under development, except instead of silver, they are going to be pink. And instead of hawks, they are going to be chihuahuas. I hope those changes are okay with you.
