"Get Down! Shut Up!"
Lt. Dan Taylor was one of the most memorable characters from the film Forrest Gump, aside from the titular character himself.
This is a project I'd been wanting to do for awhile, and after receiving the head sculpt from a friend a couple weeks ago, was finally able to get this rolling.

I did a quick mock-up to see how things fit.

I've been pouring over the film, trying to grab good screen stills for reference when I can.

Gear refining. Nearly ready to start on the helmet, then weathering.

Thinking I may trim down the rolled material for the woobie, a couple paint washes may help get a more accurate colouring as well.
Need to add a poncho to the back of the pack, behind the E-Tool.

He's shaping up pretty well so far, though.

Started on the helmet.

May swap it back and switch covers with the first one, I liked how deep it fit. This one seems to fit a bit high.

Some gear swapping and re-arranging on the belt. Taking a couple liberties with the canteens on the belt, but I think it works.

Took some padding out of the ruck, added a poncho and trimmed the woobie down.

Added a little padding to his pockets, stil need to add a couple more grenades to the belt, and a towel (looks like he has one hanging from the belt in a couple scenes when on patrol) but, getting closer!

Hahah it might happen!
Did some more research and took more stills from the film, need a little more belt tweaking, may do a helmet swap for a different steel pot, to get a deeper fit.

Did some light pastel work to dirty up the face a little.
Also got the brush added to back of the helmet, even coloured red as I found from the references.
Also gave him a pair of those clip-on thighs to bulk his legs out a bit more, but because he's on an older BBI body, had to be taped in place.

Lt. Dan is ready to hit the boonies on a patrol.

Thus far the only change I'll be making is swapping his cigarette for one of the HT Chris Taylor ones that I have...somewhere. Likely in the pocket of one of my other 'Nam figures.
In the film he smokes with the cigarette holder on.

I'll be trying to get some outdoor shots soon. This was a really fun one to put together though, and I'm glad I was finally able to make it happen.

Very nice. I loved this character and Gary Sinese is just one of those actors I love seeing in roles.

If you want to take it to the next level, I might suggest that you consider stripping the original paint from the head. The fine details of the underlying sculpts on these earlier heads were often obscured by heavy vinyl paint.

stripping the paint is something I'd definitely like to do at some point...gotta amp up my head painting skills.
Really appreciate the comment though, thanks for checking this out.
