An alternate view could be argued that Jor-El had a darker plan for Kal-El. The green crystal and related technology actually held Jor-El's soul. And the plan was for him to take over his grown son's body on Earth.
  1. He created technology that "de-powered" Superman thus readying the body for a soul transference
  2. He planned for the trio of Villains to escape the Phantom Zone causing Superman to need the de-powering chamber
  3. When Jor-El "sacrificed" his artificial life (as it was described in the script) to re-power Superman it was actually supposed to transfer his soul into Superman's body.
  4. And it worked kind-of. Instead of replacing Kal-El's soul both were in that body.
  5. It was Jor-El who broke up with Lois - he had no interest in her
  6. In Superman III we saw a different version of Clark/Superman. Jor-El was not good at playing Clark Kent. Of course that was actually just a bad script
  7. The fake Kryptonite cystal Ross Webster created split both souls out of Superman - the battle in the junk yard was Jor-El Superman vs Kal-el Clark Kent.
  8. Kal-El Clark won banishing Jor-El's soul.
Just a thought.
