It’s consolation prize for those of us who got the original run.

I prefer blind alien to skull alien but I understand the appeal.

I wish they made the whole dome non see through so it looked like the film. That’s my preference anyways.

If you don’t mind me asking, how much did you buy the bust for? I bought the deluxe and don’t need the regular portrait. I’ve considered selling the bust stand and portrait.. just concerned about shipping it without any breakage.

I think the dome was meant to be reasonably clear on the original, but, it wasn't sealed and would mist up under the lights. That's why it varies from shot to shot. I think completely clear was more how it was intended to be. Figure manufacturers have just used whatever stills were to hand. Someone somewhere has to have some decent stills taken off set of Bolaji having just put the costume on. There's grainy versions in various books but no National Geographic quality pics that everyone can use for reference.

Yes. It was a happy accident. It made the Alien more…. Alien.
 
I think it's worth saying again, that his design wasn't intended to be seen under bright lighting, highly detailed, etc. This creature lurks in the shadows/is stealthy/mysterious, etc., blending in with its surroundings when it can. So I think a distinction can be made between wanting a collectible to look 'screen accurate', versus one that we can inspect up close and really pour over every detail. These pieces would look far more 'realistic' if we lit our collection in a similar fashion to the movies.

Absolutely.

I settled for a little NECA one today. It was the version in the Kenner repro box. When I took it out and looked at it, the dome was crooked, so, I peeled it off, and looked at it to see what I could do. Whoever trimmed the vinyl didn't do a good job! There's a nick in the front edge and they trimmed too much off one part of the back. I evened the sit a bit, touched up rough bits with Citadel Nuln Oil and glued it back on with some PVA. I then noticed that the 'hoses' going from the jaw to the back were too short which limited side to side movement of the head.

To start with, I was annoyed, it was the last one in the store, so I'm stuck with it. However, I stood it up, put it where I wanted it and stood back. There, in front of me was the Alien. The flaws seemed to disappear and I realised that what I had was everything I needed it to be. Sure, it isn't perfect, but, here's the thing...

IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE!!!

It's just as you said, it was meant to be glimpsed, kept in shadow to heighten our fear of what we couldn't see. Our imaginations made it look far scarier than it ever was. As I look up at it now, the Alien is there, and that's it, it's there and that is enough.

Yep to all that.

The Fogged dome is my personal preference because the blind look is so much more freaky to me. But as I said before I get why people like the clear version.

Not sure if that was in response to me. I just like the blind look. It’s how he looked in the film yes but I just think it has a creepier vibe to it. Skull look is horrific though. It’s weird. The skull makes it scarier to me but the blind look is more intimidating.

Either way win win
 
I also prefer the blind look. The Alien for me is the one I see in the movies and although we can see the skull in some moments in the narcisus, mostly in the movie it has its blind look that I find terrifiying…
In my collection, my top1 statue is the one from Prime 1. I own the first version and it’s absolutely a piece of art, the Alien it self… I also have the coolprops bust and their maquette, I really love them too but guys…once I enter to my freak room, my eyes goes directly to the prime 1 figure! Glad to have it and I can’t imagine it done in a better way:)

This is a pretty good comparison between the Giger and Rambaldi styles (scroll to the last image for both). Giger's has the "fishier" mouth shape and the tendons curving along the jaw follow a more uniform path.



These were sculpted by Daniel Klos for a run of 1/4 resin kits (full body) from Chase Smith's Lil Shop of Horrors. Ordered one myself!

Those are some very nice sculpts!

To get a good idea of the differences between the stunt head (cast from Giger´s sculpt) and the Rambaldi head, I find Mamegyorai's 1/3 statue and 1/2 bust to be excellent references.

The NECA figure is great, but I absolutely loath the front part of the dome and the huge teeth.
Have you looked at getting the Medicom/Mafex figure? It's quite amazing. Awesome detail, good to great articulation, and it comes with both heads! It can be a bit of a pain because sometimes the articulation pops off and you have to reattach the limb or part (no breakage though!) and if you want the dome to sit properly you have to glue it at the front. But it's a beauty. Far more accurate than the NECA.

I'd seen reviews of that and I didn't like it. It looked very plastic to me and very flat when it came to paint apps. Add the fragility and the fact that it'd set me back nearly £140 and the appeal very much went. It was NECA or nowt, and I'd lived with the nowt for far too long. I pushed the mouth as closed as I could get it and the teeth didn't look too bad to me. In the semi lit part of my room where it's standing the overall impression of it standing there is good enough.

Yesterday, I did score a 1/1 piece that I'd always wanted, which is the Halcyon kit of the Dog Burster from Alien 3. I was all the more happy with my purchase when I found that it had been cast from moulds made from a rod puppet built by Studio ADI, the effects team from the movie. I don't know if the puppet got used, but, the fact that I have a part of the movie's history will do me. It also cost me less than the Mafex Big Chap!

When you consider what official 1/1 pieces go for these days, I figured that £120 was a good shout for a life sized creature. While it wasn't actually used in the film, the kit is taken from a rod puppet that Studio ADI tested. They put a video of it up on YouTube and, apart from the tail, which they didn't articulate, the puppet is identical to the kit.

As for Prime 1 stuff, well, I'll just admire everyone else's and be happy with that!
 
the second edition was kick in the b***s for those who bought v1 like me haha
mine came without any damage thankfully but all the issues from v1 was so bad
wonder how much v1s are worth now

Version 1 is holding up. The paint looks better on it imo. The new ones paint is a bit too vibrant.
