started playing last night....any tips for the new guy?

when you go to the stables for the 1st time with Hosea, don't sell the black horse you're riding, instead chose to store it in the stables.

upgrade your camp as soon as you can ( you have to do the Strauss misssion to get the ledger to do so ).

that's all i have for now as i guess i'm not too far into chapter 2 but upgading your camp is pretty helpful and you don't have to go hunting as much to bring food in, you just pay to resupply.

Lol! No, that was a scripted event in where you have a guy recognize you from somewhere else and is gonna rat you out so you have to chase him and "borrow" a guys horse to go after him. After the mini mission ends you have the option to return the horse to its owner for honor points.

haha! Yeah, I remember that. I busted out laughing reading your post about the rub though, so funny!

I accidentally punch people right in the middle of them giving me information and ruin it or I accidently pull guns out on people, get the law on me and I always just shoot the whole town up.

Then I load my manual save lol. I don't trust the auto-save. Mine has a habit of autosaving right where I don't want to be. So I always manual save ever few mins. I like that option because I can basically do what ever I want without consequence. If I **** up, which is often, BOOM back to un****ed.

Sometimes I'll manual save before I buy outfits. I'll buy the outfits, go out in sun and walk around and sometimes I decide, it sucks and re-load the save and get my money back. Comes in handy when robbing or murdering and you get caught. I hate paying fines. haha

I think most of us played spidey and are having a hard time adjusting lol

These are just some basic tips, some from my own personal experience.

You’re not a living legend, like in the first Red Dead Redemption. Keep that in mind for most of the game.

Even with an extended deadeye—which is leveled up from collecting the unique cigarette cards, completing chores at camp, getting head shots from certain distances, getting hipfire kills, cooking meals, skinning animals and crafting items—you’re still able to be outgunned pretty easily.

People can jack you up in fist fights as well. So, learn to brawl. You can evade by holding the guard button and sidestepping. You can grapple and choke too. Make sure to grab your hat any time it falls nearby. If you can’t find it, and your outfit is saved to your horse, go to your horse and access the menu to recover the hat. Style is everything! Stalker hat + Wolverine beard = awesome.

Still learning to duel. I’ve lost both of the only two duels I’ve had so far.

Cougars and bears basically insta-kill you, so always have the double-barreled long shotgun on you, for such encounters. I’m not sure hunting them the normal way is possible? I’ve tried. The cougar is too keen and the bear... yeah, he took an arrow like it was a bug bite.

Speaking of hunting, it seems like your camp needs you to hunt at least every other mission or two. So, keep that in mind when on your travels.

When you get to the part of the game where you can start robbing side businesses—aka illegal operations—that are holed up in legitimate storefronts, you’ll need to investigate a little to unlock the option to rob the side business, instead of simply robbing the clerk. And make sure to take a different horse, than you are normally seen riding, into town. Also, always have your normal clothes and a “robbery” outfit on your horse at all times. You’ll want to head into town in your robber outfit (you may need to change this one up from time to time?) and then mask up when you have a window of opportunity to rob the business. If they start a ruckus, you have to loot the important stuff quick and get the hell out of Dodge.

The last thing to warn you about is ambushes. Holy god, the ambushes. There’s one that killed me three times in a row, even with deadeye killing at least three men right off the bat. Always... always, have your weapons cocked and ready, when out riding. If you’re in the open, get a repeater holstered. If you’re galloping through trees or tighter spaces, use a shotgun. I still have yet to unlock a pump shotgun, but I imagine that will make some of the ambushes a little easier. Also, the starting repeater sucks.

Ambushes, both animal and humankind alike, have forced me to start manually saving as often as I can.

Well I've been off work on annual leave the last two weeks, and I have to confess I'm totally absorbed in the game. I just haven't had a game swallow me like this for a long, long time. Spidey I did in much smaller bursts, and I'd even go days without playing it (had to speed run it towards the end a bit to finish the story in time for RDR2) .. God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are the last two games I've been close to this absorbed by.

I've read a few criticisms (probably mainly from PC gamers or gamers who play a lot of shooters) about the gameplay.. and yeah, it is clunky. A lot clunkier than I remember GTAV being. But it just pays to play the game at a slow pace and soak it in. Don't rush the gunfight missions like you are playing a PS1 third person arcade shooter.

I'm so paced in this game that I'm still on Act 2 at the first Base Camp. I've kinda wandered to a couple of other towns a couple of times, but all my action to date hasn't been too far from the first town. Think I've poured too many hours trying to get Perfect Pelts to upgrade Base Camp. Though if I progressed further and got better weapons it might make that a bit easier, lol

Oh yes.. the above suggestion.. manual save, and manual save lots, in different save slots. I've had a couple of annoying issues I had to go backwards to escape.

I had an issue where my clothes were filthy and people kept saying I stink. I bathed like 4 times and they kept saying it lol. I had to close out of the game and re-load another save lol.

I busted out at the General store keeper though, he said ''Something stinks something awful, is that you!?!'' or something similar to that. Had to kill him for that lol.

Game of the year! The stuff involved in the game is just amazing

Another half day session, and a lot of hours spent wandering and hunting made me think back to this... Faced my first cougar today. It was attacking a random stranger in the wilderness. I managed to kill him without dying (good job as I had pelts on my horse), but man he's a slippery sucker. Ended up with a poor pelt in the process.

I've only once faced a bear in the wild (apart from the Legendary in the early story mission) … although I did earlier see one on the other side of a river and didn't manage to get a shot off on him. Anyway, the bear I did face (respawned the same bear after death with same result) came running at me nose first and swatted off my repeater shots, dead-eye and all to the nose.. I've since acquired a more powerful rifle, but with the focus on perfect pelts, these aggressive man-killers are going to be much harder than in Red Dead Redemption 1 …

The other bane of my existence for pelts is wolves, and not because I don't see them. I seem to get attacked whenever I'm up in the mountains looking for sheep or elk. But the only perfect pelt from a wolf I've acquired so far has been from another hunter's camp.

Good day doing a few camp upgrades though. Finally ventured East enough to find a plentiful spot for boar, and got myself a gator. Managed the first mail-order hunting side mission... (man, trying to get 3 stars on tiny speedy animals is annoying) … I probably won't focus on the Trapper that much tbh. It would take a lot of time up hunting (I've spent plenty of that already), for outfits I won't use. I am determined to get the Camp Upgrades done though. Even the cosmetic only ones.

I ran like a ***** from the second bear I came across. I shot two arrows into him by the time he was right on top of me. I’ve never been so terrified by a damn bear. :lol

The cougar is brutal too, but is a lot more manageable. You basically have to hunt from a perch and also try and use the scent-covering lotion. It’s still really difficult to kill one with a bow.

I stored the black horse at the stables....the game made me buy another horse. Why couldn't I ride that black horse in the mission?

Ran across a bear fighting a wolf and immediately focused on the bear. 3 or 4 repeater shots to the noggin and he was toast.

These bounties are brutal though. Climbed on a train to get the 5 birds from a moving train challenge and jumped off the train only to get a wanted status for it. Then bounty hunters showed up and i blasted them all and wound up with a $135 bounty despite wearing my facemask. That was a tough pill to swallow paying off the bounty.

At first I was a little off with the controls and gunplay but the more I play it, the more I uncover from this flawed but magnificent game. :clap

How many of you knew of these hidden details? Honestly the scope of this game is overwhelming!

I’ve been trying to use the bow for hunting. Perfect pelts are a complete ***** to get sometimes. Small creatures and natural predators especially. I must be missing something. I shoot the animals in the head and still get two star pelts. Ugh.

And yeah, the bounty system is kind of ass. It’s a bit too punishing. So is dying. I will reload if I die. Absolutely **** that **** of losing more and more money with each new death.

Has anyone had the american horror story reference or the taking the guy to the doctor? I highly suggest if you come across that you stay with him in the doctors :rotfl

This game is insane! Can't praise it enough.
