I have the regular SSC Vader, not the DX, but I think the chest box is the same one for both. You can see in my pic below that the SSC box is smaller by about 1mm on each of the four sides. I prefer the HT size, as I've always found the SSC one to be a touch too small.

I also included the b&w ESB Vader photo (and blew up the chest box section) because it's the clearest shot I have of the lettering under the lights. You'll notice that HT used the actual ESB lettering, whereas SSC used the lettering from ROTJ (even though the rest of their chest box is styled more like ESB than ROTJ). The new HT box is a more accurate ESB one in just about every way, imo. I just wish it wasn't attached to the vest.

Wow. Excellent comp pics.:clap Thanks for posting.

The one issue with scale is that of the HT parts I have (and I have a lot) is that many of the parts - including the helmet feel about 10% oversized due to the fact they were designed to go on a finished figure that approaches 14". I think that's what is giving the ESB Vader that "dumpy" look a few people have mentioned - that they put the slightly oversized parts on a smaller body and it starts to take on that "teen wearing adult clothes" thing.

The other issue worth considering is that the SSC lights have one switch though.

So what's the general consensus as the better Vader, this one or R1 Vader?

Depends who you ask, and whether you own the RO Vader.:lol

Well, everyone has their own opinion, but of the handful of reviews I’ve seen from people who actually have both in hand they have all favored the ESB figure.

I have SS ANH, SS Deluxe, Hot Toys ANH, Hot Toys R1, and the HT ESB Vader and without a doubt the ESB Vader is my favorite.

Rogue one on the right. Left is esb

As said, judging this figure from pics/videos is kinda futile, in hand I'm impressed by it despite all the nitpicks and little errors its had pointed out here, well worth the price. I'm sure the previous versions have all their little imperfections too, as every figure. As far as the mask goes, the promo pics by hot toys are closest to what it actually looks like in hand.

Is there some kind of picture set comparing ANH ver 1 and 2, and the ESB, all futzed properly? Every picture I see of each makes me change my mind about which to get lol.

Unless photoed properly there is lens distortion galore on these figures I've realized after getting one in hand, especially Vader since his mask has parts that will be a lot closer and far away from the camera then say a face sculpt. My advice is compare the promo shots of each figure for the look you prefer.

Personally I'm perfectly happy with esb Vader, massive step up from my old SS deluxe.

What's so great about the ESB in hand compared to the others? It looks really bad to me in pics. Seriously asking, not tryin' to be a ding dong.
Exactly. Kinda gives that "What a piece of junk!" vibe. Although, I will say, I love how the tunic drapes..and that's about it lol.
For me, ANH V1 with RO/V2 parts for the win.
Seriously, even if the Jedi one isn't better and not a shrunken down version of the 1/4 one..I'm still getting it. Gotta have a shiny Vader in my collection.

Here’s a side-by-side picture of the ESB Boba Fett and Darth Vader (Vader is on ROTJ Luke’s stand for the shot):
