Labyrinth Reboot. yaaay?

Let's be honest, the original is not that good...even if David Bowie was good in it. That film not only lost the studio money, it got bad reviews, so that film is the perfect candidate for a remake, especially since most people have never seen it. As long as they don't use too much CGI, it could be pretty good....or bad. I bet those complaining about it, haven't even seen the film in like 20 years

I think Snake got it right... they can cash in on David's passing.

It's horribly cynical and makes me feel bad saying so but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this were at least part of their motivation.

I'm sure it has something to do with it. The Bowie nostalgia will only last so long though, especially in regards to movies, since music is where he made his real mark. By the time the movie is made, the feeling will have passed for most and people will reminisce about a different, Dead celebrity.

I think that his passing just reminded some executive(s) that their studio owned the film rights and that perception of it being hot because of his passing helped push the project through. The movie really won't benefit from the public interest in Bowie after his death.

The movie will only do well based off its own merits, really. It's just not big enough a property to garner much interest on its on.

I'm sure Bowie's passing was the last little bit of momentum the project needed to get out the gates.

It's really a win/ win for the studio. If they make it and it's a hit, they have a new franchise, plus interest is created in original and they can profit off a new Blu/DVD release. If it fails, people will have renewed interest in the original and they can profit off a new Blu/DVD release.

Even if it flops, most movies manage to turn a profit globally, unless it is a monstrous cluster****.

I think it's quite good. Many bad reviews (and its lack of initial success) are probably a function of expectations not being met, since this wasn't a traditional kids' movie. But it was effectively creepy with a very moody vibe, puppet work was top rate, as all of Henson's stuff was, Bowie was distinctive and memorable. It was a quality production.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty safe investment nowadays. Marketing is down to a science, and even super low budget movies have a ton of free advertising at their disposal with the Internet, as long as they are creative in the way they do it, a hot viral video can be more effective than millions spent on advertising. Even direct to video movies can make decent money.

Movies are so formulaic now, so few chances taken anymore, would be nice to see a few years go by with no remakes, reimaginings or reboots.

I'll even take a year with no sequels, but let's wait til after SW episode 8 for that.

At least the puppets had their charm, I'm sure the remake will be all CG characters. Movies like this and Dark Crystal would be very unlikely to get made today.

Timing is way too close for it to be a coincidence.

eeeeeeh, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator are my favourite childhood movies.

Recently I've been open to a reboot of the Neverending story. I really feel as long as they give it to director that loves the movie they can really open up that world and with todays effects bring those characters to life better than they could in 1984.

With that in mind I think they could do the same with Labyrinth. The world they created was crazy, dark and vast and could be well served with todays cinematic techniques. If they really are going ahead with it I hope the director is a big fan and a decent budget is given to it. Hopefully they can still encorporate puppetry into it aswell. For me the work those puppeteers did then still holds very strong today.

I don't think it's about being out of ideas, it's that studio execs don't want to take a chance on an unproven commodity. They want every film to have a built in audience and not only be a hit, but a franchise.

I remember see the original on cable in the 80's and haven't cared to watch it since.
