Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Yeah I was just too young for 89 Batman, 6 at the time. My parents were the sort that would not let me see any movies like that anyway :gah: I vaguely remember the hype surrounding Batman Returns, kids in junior school having Batman lunch boxes and pencil cases etc. The first Batman movie I saw at the cinema was Batman Forever. :slap

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Compared to the original star wars i can't tell cause i wasn't born in 77 but i can say that in 89 It was absolutly crazy with Batman!
Being a 7-8 years old child in 1989 was such a cool moment!!!

Wasn't it?

I was living in South America at the time, and even by Third World Country standards, it was NUTS. This is why i keep saying that, for most of the rest of the world, Keaton WAS the first Batman most people were introduced to. There are parts in the world where Comics are more than a luxury, they are just RARE. You cant find them, and if you do, you are simply not able to find the next issue, and so on. But a movie? The local theater that seated only 40 people and had only one projector was FULL of people watching Keaton kicking ass. That was one of the finest moments of my childhood, and I'm 100% sure I'm not alone on that sentiment.

Toys? Man, those were expensive. Only available at department stores at the time, my parents couldn't afford them as they were imported from the US. They bought me knock off Batman stuff that I absolutely adored, as I didn't know the difference at the time.

There are plenty more reasons as to why Keaton will always be The Batman to me. One would have to be a fool not to appreciate what Nolan did for the franchise, He made Batman relevant again in a way. But for me, Keaton holds that special place.

Well, I was born in the sixties, and thanks to the merchandising from Planet of the Apes, Lucas was savvy enough to keep control of all merchandising on Star Wars. And I can tell you from being fortunate enough to have been around for both Star Wars and Batman premieres, batman wasn't half the phenomenon that the first Star Wars movie was when it comes to a global experience. Star Wars changed everything about how movie studios handle licensing, merchandising and likeness rights. Not that Batman wasn't huge, it was.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

36yo here, can just recall and loved the last days of the SW golden years (77 - 85) and remember the hype and excitement of Batman very well. Had the 3 Toybiz figures, collector cards, and comic but didn't get to see the first film till video release. Saw Batman Returns on the big screen though. A great time to be a Batman fan.

Star Wars created the modern Hollywood blockbuster and how merchandise was to be incorporated. In 1989 Batman would redefine that in terms of pre release publicity techniques, emphasis on opening weekends over longer theatical runs (Batman made most of its HUGE takings in the first 2 weeks) and the shortening of the window from cinema to home video releases.

The effects of both films are felt today and are used to explain the non stop franchise films and the lack of risk taking coming out of Hollywood these days :lol

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I think Jaws is actually technically credited with coining the term blockbuster but yeah Star Wars took it to completely new level in terms of merchandising. I'm only 29 so obviously wouldn't really know first hand but from footage I've seen and old articles and whatnot the original Burton Batman seemed pretty massive at the time too.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Just got him today. He looks great, the cape looks great as well. One of the spikes on the gauntlet was broken off when it arrived and I broke another just swapping a hand. Be insanely careful they break off pretty damn easily. The belt looks like a different color than I've been seeing in the pictures as well. Also the bat symbol stands out so well, you can see it from a pretty good distance. I didn't have much time to mess around with him but he took the top spot on the shelf for sure.

These broken spike stories (i believe that's 2 now) are kinda depressing. Wonder why they didn't include extras like 89?:huh

That's correct. Jaws is credited with coining the term blockbuster.

Yeah and when I say I was careful, I barley even touched the guy before two spikes broke off. I'm hoping someone can point me In the right direction in terms of glue or something to fix it with

is it the plastic that is snapping or is it "breaking" due to lack of glue?

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

loctite clear gel glue is best when it comes to glueing plastic figure types

I think they are falling off - not necessarily broken. They just need gluing back on.

The problem is losing them.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Is The cape "wired" on this like it was on the DX09?

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

I honestly can't tell, it looks like it is snapped, I can't insert it back into a gap if you know what I mean. The cape is wired, I made it look pretty good with no trouble.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

It has wires in the 'seams' or 'veins'. Seems as if you can easily pull them out, making the cape much more manageable.

I see.

Are you planning on doing the same mod you did on the DX09's?

I wouldn't mind seeing your results and of course a tutorial on how to do it, if it is different than the first Keaton Bats.

Re: Hot Toys – MMS 293 & 294 Batman Returns: Batman and Bruce Wayne (Keaton) Set

Is it still possible even now to purchase a Toni MEI batman cape..maybe I'll wait until he decides to make one for the BR

Yep I think you still can order the newest version cape for DX09 from Tony. It is thinner than the battle version and doesn't drape as nice imo.

Man, all I need in my life, as a collector, is a decent Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman fig.

I don't collect Hot Toys figures, but I would DEFENITELY buy a HT Batman Returns Catwoman, mainly because I know that would be the only really good Returns Cat figure.

In all these years (23 years!!), no company has ever made a decent figure for that character.

DC Comics Catwoman Maquette by Tweeterhead | Sideshow Collectibles

It's a statue, not a figure; but 1/6 scale, and the likeness and detail is amazing.
