He's here!! Very happy with it. Unpacking this beast is such a mission on its own.

There are in hand photos scattered about that thread from page 84 onwards.

From the pictures I've seen the paint job is superior on the prototype, but isn't it always? Not to often do you see a product that is as good as the prototype. Having said that from the pictures I've seen Smaug looks great and I'm very excited to receive mine. I just got the tracking number sent to me. :)

We need to compare it to the casual non-perfectly lit and photoshopped pics ppl took at sdcc.

You can clearly see the lack of skill comparing the two, yes lighting helps, but that is not the whole story. We don't expect proto paint. Every piece will be different though, so hopefully that was just a lazy paint job on that one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still exited to get my statue. But this is not some "taken under good light" or "photoshopped photos" thing, that's why I tried comparing the portrait only, as it was one of Texxen's photo that showed more detail. Just look at the portrait, the paint app on the final product is sloppy. I don't know what to call those things that are white at the bottom of the chin, but they're just white (yellowish) spots with no detail whatsoever, that kind of details are missing all over the portrait. Of course the statue will still look awesome but in that price range, and being a "big" WETA release I expected more detail on the paint app.

I know you can't expect the paint app of a well paid professional when your statue will be painted by minimum wage outsourced workers, maybe the last couple statues I received, spoiled me some but it is possible to receive something that comes quite close to the proto, in some cases (XM) identical.

Those details imho are what make a piece AMAZING instead of good. My final judgement will be reserved until I get my hands o it, but for now while this is no disaster I truly believe they could've done a better job with the paint app.

The in hand paint jobs shown so far are on par with $20 plastic dinosaurs, its an insult to the incredible sculpt and otherwise top notch statue. If I was one of the 3d artists/sculptors creating Smaug I'd have some heavy sighing to do in the painters general direction.

So this is going to be my first WETA statue :), do they send a tracking number? Received an email on sunday that said "your order has been processed and released to our US Warehouse for dispatch", but no tracking number yet.

They don't sent a tracking number.

....Ok I don't take back what I said buuuut just saw the pics at Smaug the Terrible - statue ~~ ORDER LINK IN FIRST POST ~~ - Page 84 - The Shadow and Flame ... aside from some QC issuesTHIS LOOKS ****ING AMAZING hahaha. Can't wait to get mine :). I'm praying the statue gods to receive one without defects

Thanks for sharing.
I saw a picture on the link of weta with the final in hand head and the one that is showing on sdcc.
There's a hughs difference in the paintjob.
The one from sdcc has more black around his eyes, also the things on his jaw are white instead of yellow.
This dragon is to clean.
The one of sdcc has a real good painting job,so much more finer paint job.

There's a drastic difference between this

AND THIS

Both are in hand pics, maybe the first one got unlucky and received a bad piece or he's just plain awful at taking photos lol. We'll have to wait for more people to upload pics

Yeah so far that one set of photos we are all pointing to does look AWFUL. But the rest of the in hand shots I have seen look damn good.

TBH I dont see that much of difference between upper and lower pic. Lower has obvioudly some kind of filter but they are miles away from this.

Here's some pics of Smaug from SDCC I found on the Internet.

I don't think it's the same statue that have been photographed for the Weta product images
since there seems to be some slight differences in the paintjob. I think the paintjob looks
really good in these "amateur" pics, different (much better) compared to the in-hand pics.
In some ways I actually think these images (the paintjob) looks even better (more natural)
than the Weta prototype pics.

Of course there will be some difference between a prototype and massproduced items but
I agree that for such an expensive statue the paintjob could/should be a bit better that what
we have seen so far.
