re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

She's really upset. I called her when I got off of work and she was crying.

My mom walks the mall in the morning with the old folks most days. Last Thursday she found a wallet in the bathroom with more than $400 in it. She checked the wallet for anything with a phone number in it, but there wasn't anything in it with that information. She did recognize the older lady in the driver's license picture and walked around the mall trying to find her, but was unable to. She thought of holding the wallet until she saw the lady another day, but she was worried that she would be freaking out about her missing wallet, money and cards that were in the wallet, so she took it to the security office. She explained to the officer at the desk that the lady in the picture was a regular mall walker and asked if she had been to the office looking for it. The security officer said she hadn't stopped by. My mom explained that there was money in the wallet, showed it to the officer and mentioned that the lady that lost it was probably on a fixed income, so she was really worried and wanted her to have it back as soon as possible. The guard said that he'd get the police stationed at the mall involved and make sure that the lady would get her wallet back.

This morning my mom saw the lady that lost her wallet and told her that she had turned it into the office. The lady said that she got her wallet, but all the money was gone. My mom was really angry about this and told the lady exactly what had happened and how she had counted the money and told the security officer about it. The lady asked if my mom would go with her to the security office to get a police officer to take a report, which my mom agreed to. When they got into the office, the same security guard that had originally taken in the wallet looked at both of them and his face turned bright red and he went into the back office. The lady with the missing money commented that he looked very guilty.

The police officer took the lady into the office and talked to her for a few minutes. Then he took my mom into a separate office. My mom explained that she thought the security officer took the money because of his reaction and the fact that he told the lady with the wallet that a page working for the mall found the wallet, when my mom was the one who found it. Additionally, the lady said that she stopped by the office looking for the wallet before the time that my mom had stopped by, but the guy told my mom that the lady never stopped by. Then the cop started getting nasty with my mom and said that he though she took the money because she was accusing the security officer of taking it. Then he started saying that he thought she was hiding something and that she should just admit to taking the money. My mom was really upset and said that she was just trying to do the right thing and get the money back to the lady. The cop kept on her and said that everything pointed to my mom and that he could arrest her right there. He said that my mom shouldn't tell her family about what happened because we'd find out when a police car comes to pick her up. He finally let her leave, but he ended by saying that the lady was still outside and asked if my mom had anything to say to her. My mom said no, because she didn't take any money from the lady. This cop was interrogating my mom for an hour and a half.

We're going to go the the police station to file a complaint tomorrow, but I just don't think it's enough. This idiot shouldn't have a badge, in my opinion. I worked in security when I was just out of high school. People that steal don't return wallets to security or go up the person that lost the wallet and ask if they got it back. They take the money and throw the wallet away. I've seen it dozens of times. This piece of crap tried to bully a 56 year old woman, who was doing the decent thing and I want him and the security guard to pay for this.

Sounds like an over zealous cop. File a complaint and hope for the best, but don't expect too much. I've been in law enforecement for over a decade now and can tell you most complaints don't go far unless that particular officer has a long history of complaints against them.

The bottom line is too many people complain because they are trying to "get back" at the officer, more often then not its unwarranted complaints. I'm not saying your mothers complaint is unwarranted, just speaking from experience.

Most complaints are takin with a grain a salt unless there are accusations of very clear rights violations. Complaints like "this guy was an *******" usually fall on def ears.

I don't usually hate police officers, but this one that gave my mom a hard time has probably changed that.

Theres good cops and bad cops, don't let one **** soil your opinion of every officer out there.

I think I might write all the local newspapers about it. F this ********. My mom was trying to help somebody and got accused because of it.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

:lol

Going on a witch hunt probably isn't gonna get you anywhere either. Law enforcement has a tendency to "circle the wagons" if you do stuff like that.

I'll suggest that you file a formal complaint, in writing, AND request a sit down with his Sgt./Lt. Face time will always take you farther then filing a report. You can even request that you talk to his Sgt./Lt. with him present, that way you and your mother can say what you want to his face. That way you can at least ensure that he is addressed by his Sgt./Lt. about the situation.

Just some friendly suggestions :)

Sorry that happened to your Mom, Ben. I'd be pissed too.

I can understand that, but I still feel like it's not enough. I don't have any faith that his superior will do anything about it.

Using basic deductive reasoning, it's pretty easy to figure out that my mom wouldn't take the actions that she did if she did indeed steal the money and it's kind of frightening that they have an officer that thinks so illogically.

My mom is a frail lady. I worry about her all the time. She just went through my dad running around behind her back and her first grandchild was born two years ago with a birth defect that means she'll never be able to walk or play and will probably die at an early age. The year before that, her mother died. I think it's safe to say that in a short few years my mom has gone through much more than anyone deserves to. I think this is why I'm so ready to go after this cop for bullying her. She doesn't need anymore of this and my protective instincts are kicked into high gear.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

I hear you Ben, hope you can get it resolved.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Ben, I'm sorry to hear your mom went through this, especially with all she's been through. :(

Speaking from a similar experience, I wouldn't go much further than what KD recommended.
Anything more would be tough without a witness (notice how he took them individually into a private room) or in-hand evidence of the officer's past performance.

Also, if you have a family lawyer, talk with them about the incident, and what can be done next time to prevent it (know your rights).

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

No key items really just the loose weapons for my childhood figures. After you're done I'll see what's left of the figures.

I think it was me-->you-->punk-->?

I believe that is correct. I mentioned to Ken the other day that if whoever it is that is taking the Jedi Luke from Ken, (with the blue saber), if they are interested I would swap them out with a green saber Jedi Luke if they want. I want one with the blue saber. But it's no big deal either way, just buy what you want.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Yeah, but I'd have to insist that if there was a key item or items you needed from his list, that you get them. ;)

Plus I'm poor... I'll make a list, and fire it off to Ken. Was there anyone else I was supposed to be behind?

*Puts on chastity belt*

Me, i think. I PM'd Ken after he posted the first list.

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Sorry to hear about your mom being accused of that stuff Ben. :/

re: (galactiboy's Cantina) "Where everybody knows your name..."

Yeah, that is some crazy crap Ben. I hope you can get a complaint in. :(

Man, I was reading the ghost thread in the Other Topics section. Some scary stuff in there! My hairs are all standing up now.

A line had started months before he ever posted a list, we have just been waiting for him to dig through his warehouse to get to the figs to make a list. :lol

If ghost stuff scares you, you should come spend a week with me. The house I live has had two people die in it (nearly three) and strange **** happens on the regular.

When my wife moved in she was scared to be alone there for the first few months and had a hell of a time sleeping at night :lol

Yeah, that's cool with me.

We have a spare bedroom, you can sleep in there. It also happens to be one of the rooms where someone died.

Our bedroom is the other.

In the Bay Area our ABC affiliate has this news segment they do called " seven on your side"... Do you have anything like that in your area? The press love stories like this, and it would be the only way your mom might find some sort of justice, after all, no laws were broken, with the possible exception of someone stealing the money.
