I'm new to the hobby and am discovering quickly how expensive it gets. I refuse to pay retail for a piece unless it's a must have for me. Part of the enjoyment of the hobby for me is getting good deals for items in my collection. Although I do this for the enjoyment I do look at it as a form of investment and hope that when/If the day comes where I need/want to liquidate my collection that at the very least I'll make my money back or turn a small profit. What's the best deal people have been able to get and on which piece?

Mine is colossus comiquette that I've been hunting for for over a year. I just recently acquired the exclusive for $285 with shipping.

MIB, flaw-free Lara Croft Guardian of the Light PF (with free EX print) for $195.

Hard to get a decent deal here in the U K.
Managed to get a Spider-man, Sandman Venom Dio, which i love, for £80 and a Robocop PF for £100, sold for much more, in a FP sale.

The best deals I've made over the years was pre-odering/buying stuff when it was released and not paying stupid flipper-prices on eBay.

Agreed, but there are always those items you miss out on pre-order or maybe were on the fence on and once seeing an in hand review you change your mind and decide you want. Then you're sort of at the mercy of flipper prices or just need to be very patient and do a lot of due diligence to find what you want.

Also, for those of us who are new to the hobby we've missed out on A LOT of great pieces. Iron spiderman comiquette by sideshow is one im hunting for now, top of my list but very tough to find for a reasonable price. Plus....let's face it....even the pre-order prices are all getting a bit out of hand these days....

I got a.shadow of the colossus valus kotobukiya statue for $30. Usually goes for high $200s on Ebay when it's RARELY on there.

I think my greatest find was when I bought the Bowen Jim Lee-style Jean Grey statue for $75 from a Tales of Wonder clearance sale a couple years ago. I had to sell her last year, and I kind of regret it now seeing how much she runs on the secondary market.

I bought the Kotobukiya Vampire Hunter D "Nightmare" statue for $50 on eBay. When it arrived with a broken hand I convinced the seller to give me a 50% refund. And after some careful gluing you can barely tell it was ever damaged.

I've also had some decent luck with Batman statues lately. I found the Batman: The Animated Series maquette for $100 in a random comic shop last year and just acquired the original Black & White: Mike Mignola statue for $100 a few weeks ago.

I Won an auction on ebay for a classic Riddler "jim carrey" statue for $20 and free shipping.

Bought a SS Logan Premium Format on the bay as a buy it now for 225 shipped.... Thought there was going to be something wrong with it for sure. Piece showed up in original art and shipping box and he was immaculate! Still can't believe someone sold him that cheap. Also picked up a beast comiquette ex on the bay for 265 shipped in an auction. Suckers!!! :slap :rotfl

I like adding the extra challenge in your hobby rules of 'only paying under retail price' for pieces. That would make things interesting.

But I still wouldn't look at this as an investment.....

I Def agree.... Extremely disposable income goes towards this hobby haha... Wife ensures that (no matter how much I whine and beg! ). It does have investment qualities Imo, Supply and demand... You see it all the time with those grail like pieces years down the road having a value way more than what they originally retailed for. I also think Hollywood is creating a new wave of fans for this stuff with all the comics coming to the big screen.

Actually I find thinking about the figures/statues collecting hobby as a %50 investment and %50 hobby is totally wrong because one day or another you will become one of those who ONLY buy statues of popular characters to be able to resell them in the future and maybe buy two pieces of those statues and hide one in the closet for years to get a good profit and this is totally fine if you think about it as a business only, but.. it is not a hobby to collect what "people" want.

Maybe investment was a wrong choice of words. I buy what i like first and foremost, never something just because it's popular. I just try to get them at un–inflated or below retail prices (where I can) ... To me that's just a smart move... These things do cost hundreds of dollars.... but to each his own. Years from now I may want to get rid of something for a new interpretation of the same character or something else that I like. I like to think I will b able to get what I paid for whatever I'm selling back or maybe a little more to pay for the new piece, that's all.

Have you ever sold a piece? Did you charge more than retail price? If so, nothing wrong with it. These things tend to increase in value over time... Like an investment... (haha a good investment at least! )

LOL Actually no, I am still digging for a good Spidey on ebay.

I know what you mean my friend, actually a few weeks back I sold a figure for the first time, I wanted to get a HT Joker so I decided to sell one of my oldest figures, DC Direct "13 Joker, I listed him in a local website "Because I am from Saudi Arabia and it will cost a fortune to ship to Europe or the US" so I listed it for $150 and this is only $28 more than what i paid for him+shipping and in an hour I got a mail from an interested buyer who agrees to the price, 15 minutes later someone offered $175, half an hour later some one offered $200.. and it wasn't even an auction!!

A few days back I got excited again and decided to sell my classic Bowen Punisher so I can get the modern one and guess what... nobody even cared to ask me about the statue, why? because here in Saudi Arabia we don't have comics, so if you didn't know him from the classic video game or the movie you will never know who's Punisher is.

And based on that experience I wrote my previous reply.

Wow, no comics!? That's a shame! I'm glad you're still able to collect.

Got my 1/4th alien queen bust for a lil over $500 on eBay. Saved about 500 bucks there!
Also my morgul lord legendary scale bust for $250 a few years back. I've seen people selling it for 600 plus!

Patients is key! There are always good deals to be made! Not everyone out there is a flipper or looking to take advantage of other people's wallets!
