There is a saying, less is more. Some of the best monster movies showed little of the monster and it was in the mystery of it that kept people's interest. Even in ESB (the original), the Wampa is not all in your face.

I agree. And in keeping with the SW comparison that's my #1 problem with the Clone Wars and elements of the prequels: over-explaining and/or overtly showing what was previously so filled with intrigue and mystique it was legendary.

Do you also think the origin story in Superman 78 (even further "back then") was being spoon-fed to the audience?

Caught the opening to Superman II and they spoonfed Superman I to them in the opening credits like who'd go see II without having seen I? It's not a TV show. :slap

Even the biggest faux surprise...the transformation of Palpatine to full-fledged Emperor was like by the numbers...not much mystery...oh ___, I thought I was back in the Star Wars blu-ray thread. :slap

Haha...this is on Wiki...

"Tim Burton chose Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent because he wanted to include the villain Two-Face in a future film using the concept of an African-American Two-Face for the black and white concept,[17] but Tommy Lee Jones was later cast in the role for Batman Forever which disappointed Williams." I can't even imagine the backlash from different groups.

I don't agree, the origin stories take up too much time...I mean 45 min for BB...many people were wondering if Batman was running late for his own movie. :cuckoo:

That is why I dont like "origin" films. They take up too much time building up the character. Thats why I like "The Dark Knight" over "Batman Begins". And "Spider-man 2" over "Spider-man". I mean, "Batman Begins" works for what it is and they did a good job, but Id rather see Batman in his prime with everything already established. I think thats why I like "BATMAN" so much, he was already "Batman" and was out there fighting crime. Being a fan of the character as a child, I didnt need to be told "how" he became Batman. I just wanted to see my favorite comic character fighting my favorite comic villain on the big screen. That was enough for me at 8 years old.

I think "The Incredible HULK" did a good job filling in the origin story with the flash backs. You dont need a whole 30-45 minutes showing how he becomes the Hulk. I think that has been the best "origin" shown on screen so far. IMO.

:exactly: And this summer, Captain America suffered from that--the whole backstory. Ironically, Thor did a better job getting it over quick. X-Men: FC gets a pass as it was showing how the mutants were discovered and trained, etc.

I agree with some of that but it depends how the story was told. Give me Iron Man over iron man 2 any day though I enjoyed both :D

That's a good point, some movies know how to insert an origin story in. IM1 used flashbacks to do it and I think that's usually the better way.

Eh. I actually slightly prefer Begins over TDK, BECAUSE of the way the origin is told - to me it's brilliant but to each his own

I think of both as just one long excellent movie so I think Nolan made the right decisions on how he layed it all out.

I'm like you though and prefer the 1st half over the 2nd :lol

Thats why I didnt list Iron Man. They are about tied in my opinion. They did a great job with Tony Starks "origin" into Iron Man because it entertaining to watch. I can watch Iron Man just and much as I can watch Iron Man 2. :)

I disagree on Captain America, actually. Steve Rogers' backstory is what makes the character so likable & root-able. Without that, he's just a dude in a cool suit with special abilities. But because we get to know him before that he's arguably the most likable and heroic of all of the film superheroes.

That's the fine line they tread in these origin movies...too much...too little. 89 Batman was great for having Batman already in action and then telling his backstory in mysterious bits. CA, I agree, was about the man more than CA so therein was the problem. That's why there seemed so little of CA actually in the movie and more Steve Rogers. Avengers and CA2 will fix that.

Man, that really shows how ____ty and halfassed the Returns suit was. It's like they didn't even try. :lol

Not at all, Returns suit has a better fitting cowl, boots and suit was made with sharper details then the previous suit.

Burton knew everybody already at least had some knowledge of Batman's origin. That's what makes the whole opening scene of the movie fun. He had a lot of people, including myself, thinking that was little Bruce and his parents getting ready to be robbed and then he just slowly adds his origin story to the film. Brilliant.

I also like how Hulk's was told in the flashback sequences as well.
