So Suicide Squad is pretty much DC's answer to Thunderbolts.

It kinda seems like they're just putting out a ton of titles in hopes that some will stick. Pardon my ignorance, does Marvel have alot of titles with characters no one knows?

I think that's relative to how well you know either DC or Marvel. I couldn't tell you who the x-men are nowadays outside of Cyclops and Wolverine but I can tell you the line ups of every team running around in the current DCU.

I don't know if the X-Men are a good reference point though, they always create weird mutants as expendables, they are the Mutant version of the red shirts.

I'll say this, during Civil War I had no clue who many of the people were on either side having been on a DC kick for a while before that but I don't believe any of them had their own titles. Look at the X-pendables, you don't exactly see Darwin starring in his own title...

I am not very happy with the Super designs. has there been any word on Captain Marvel and family?

Nothing which is shocking especially since Johns made it a point to restructure them in Flashpoint to fit in easier. A lot of people are worried they didn't make the cut.

I could have gone without the red underpants but what is up with that stupid boot design? Superman not super enough?
Superboy makes perfect sense now, he's a clone between superman and brainiac!!
Supergirl...what was wrong with her costume before?
Note to Lee: Just because you can change something, doesn't mean you should!

Captain Marvel instead of Grifter, problem fixed.

Yeah that's more what I'm thinking of, people in their own titles. This Resurrection Man, Frankenstein: Agent of Shade, and Mr. Teriffic to name three seem to be completely new. Like I said I'm not overly familiar with comics in general, so maybe there are alot of these type of characters running around the Marvel universe too.

Giving Mr. Terrific a title is like giving Nightcrawler a title, he is a popular member of the JSA, not the most popular and a lot of people like the character but I doubt he'll be able to hold a monthly.

From the looks of it Supergirl and Power Girl were melded into one character and Conner is now half terminator so let's see where this goes.

It's all ____ing crazy, changes for the sake of it but the only one that really has me spewing venom is what they did to my goddamn Teen Titans.

Based on the preview art and description, it looks like Mr. Terrific is DC answer to Iron Man. Anyone else getting that vibe?

Jim Lee on the Costume Changes:

Months ago, when the decision was made to launch 52 new number ones, Co-Publisher Dan Didio, Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras along with DCU Executive Editor Eddie Berganza and VP-Art Direction and Design Mark Chiarello and I went over the entire proposed DCU lineup and bookmarked the characters we felt would benefit the most from a visual redesign. That initial list started at around 30 characters but quickly ballooned up as books got under way. Realizing the amount of time and effort it would take to complete the long list of designs, Mark Chiarello and I enlisted artist Cully Hamner onto the team, giving us not just another set of hands but another style altogether so we would have a variety of styles to literally draw from.

Cully, as many of you know, is a veteran artist with diverse professional experiences, one of the co-founders of Atlanta’s Gaijin studios and also the co-creator of the WildStorm comic RED. He had also done a spectacular redesign of Blue Beetle some years back which Mark and DC loved so he was a natural choice for this project. Having known Cully both professionally and personally over the years, I knew his collaborative mindset and sheer creative skills would be perfect for this massive undertaking. Cully in particular took point in creating many of the designs you guys have seen debut in our staggered announcements, and his feedback and input and revisions on countless others were just as instrumental. On top of all this, there was the input provided by Mark Chiarello, a terrific artist in his own right, who gave countless notes and corralled all the images and feedback to make sure all the creators working on the titles had the information they needed and that every voice in this highly collaborative project was taken into account.

The entire redesign process was very organic in that every character’s final design came about in an entirely unique fashion. More often than not, Cully and I worked independently or in parallel but sometimes, we jammed together on the same set of designs. And of course, all the designs were shaped and refined by the input of a series editor, writer and artist. In the end, we wanted to make sure all the key creators on a title were satisfied with the final look of the characters as the creative teams were the ones who had to live with and draw the new looks on a near daily basis. For instance, on Birds of Prey, the design process started with initial sketches by the series artist Jesus Saiz which Cully and I then used to riff off of. After rounds of input and alterations, the near final looks were then tweaked by Jesus himself at the end. Or on a series like Teen Titans, Brett Booth contributed most of the designs and Cully and I served as sounding boards, tossing out suggestions and visual counterpoints as we hammered out the final looks almost in real time over massive email chains. And lastly, for other titles altogether, the series’ artists did all the designs and Mark and I just chimed in and signed off on the final approvals.

All in all, a huge project, one which only now is finally coming to light. On a reader level, we realize changing even the smallest detail of any character’s costume brings out the passion in every fan, but I thought it important to describe the process so you all knew the time and care and thought that was put into each and every redesign. In the end, while you may not always agree with the changes, at least you know they were not made lightly or without great effort.

Finally, I wanted to thank all the DC editors for their incredible patience and invaluable input and so many of the the creative teams for allowing Cully and me to jam along with you. It was definitely an honor.

Best,
Jim Lee

jeez! look at that stupid head covering for Kid Flash. It's like Mr. T with a mask on. Is that a head scarf on Wonder Girl? I thought I hated the old superboy costume for it's regularness but I didn't realize how good it was until I saw this new sleeveless costume.
Hey, Lee! why don't you add tail feathers on Robin's new costume?

Actually AJ, if you read Mike's post above with the letter from Lee, Brett Booth was actually the one who redesigned TT. I've never like Booth's art cause it seems to have an "Image Comics" feel to it.

Didn't Marvel try that with all the B-lister mutants in the 90's to no avail?

This relaunch looks stupid as hell. The Teen Titans are a bunch of tools, and so are most of the other redesigns. If this is DC's attempt at being modern and edgy, they're about 15 years late to the party. They keep coming out with cheesy ass designs like these and they might as well just change their name to Top Cow.

IC - that's exactly the same feel i got when I saw the Teen Titans cover. I would almost bet that some Image comics had the same exact layout and design. I did read the post after I posted, I just wanted to bag on Lee. I intend to blame everything that will go wrong with this on Lee, for no rational reason. :rotfl I would put equal blame to Johns on this but I liked his run on JSA, Green Lantern and some other stuff but I can't find anything I liked that Lee did since he came over to DC.

Are we sure that DC bought out Image and not the other way around?

I didn't think the Teen Titans could look any worse, then I saw this. Wow this is just horrible. To begin with they barley changed Conner so why even bother. His new lack of costume is horrible though. Kid Flash is least offensive of the 4 that were changed. I don't know who the other 3 are. Supergirl there was nothing wrong with Micheal Turner's costume design the only thing alot of people asked for was for her skirt to be red so it was more iconic. So fine do that, this however is just awful. As for Jim Lee talking about variety and different styles. The DCnU is made up of high collars and armor, and then the rest is just generally useless changes.
