The yellow sheet is a standard Post-It Note, which measures 3" square.
I drew the 1" square divisions on it to give an exact size reference.

It is a Wolf Spider I believe, and never in my life have I seen one even
half that size around where I live. They are very common in Michigan,
but usually are sized ranging from a dime to a quarter tops.

This one is definitely a MONSTER! Shelob, or at least a descendent.

We looked at him/her for a while, I took many pictures, and set it free
in the woods far behind my home, so as not to find the critter inside
the garage (or the house!) again. May it live long and well, far away.

Mildly poisonous if at all. On the small ones it'd be no big deal, but I'm
betting that this big fellow/momma would put a Helluva bite on ya.

I trapped it in a plastic container, and then moved it to a 2.5 gallon
aquarium for the pictures. It is ugly, and very neat all at the same time.

It certainly isn't like a Black Widow, or Brown Recluse, where you'll be
in the hospital or dead, but I sure wasn't taking any chances.

Guuuhhhhhhh.... Poisonous or not, that guy/gal would be dead if he were in my garage.. :emperor

I applaud your compassionate view though. My mother raised me to be like that (she would cry if a mouse trap killed a mouse) but I'm afraid 4 older brothers were hell bent on making me a ruthless arachniphobe (as a result of years of merciless teasing).

Here's what I did to my Shelob...

I've seen those pictures before, and I wasn't all that thrilled about it.
(I know it isn't you Melvin, so nothing against you on them)
I'm certainly no tree-hugger or anti-fur activist, BUT I see no reason
to kill or maim any critters unless I have a good reason to do so.
I like to hunt, and do so for meat. Fine and dandy. I'll also get rid
of pests as necessary, such as woodchucks or moles or gophers.

I was VERY bad to some wildlife in my ignorant youth, and how having
learned the error of my ways, I'm teaching my kids to only dispose of
or kill animals when they have a good reason to, such as for food.

This spider just happened to choose an unfortunate place to take up
residence, so I viewed them, and re-located them to greener pastures.
I'm actually very happy to have seen the largest Wolf Spider of my entire
life and to also show my kids how neat it was.
No reason for me to off the little bugger just because they liked my garage.
(I think he was going to steal my car had I not found him soon enough!) :lol

I'm off to hug a tree and pet a deer! :monkey5

Good on ya man! I would have probably freaked out for at least 5 minutes before trying my damndest to trap the little bugger.... or in that case.. BIG bugger. As much as SPider's freak me out, they are interesting things and very integral to the balance of things. And to kill such a large specimen for no reason seems silly to me as well.... :D

Everytime I've ever killed a spider, I always felt a little bad. And since I stopped going all "Terminator" on them, I've had far less traumatic experiences with them. I still wrap myself up in the covers (like a mummy) though, just in case. Brown Recluse's are horrible here in FL and my sister was bitten once... so needless to say... I am cautious.

Thanks DA!

I've seen pictures of the damage a Brown Recluse spider bite does, and
I'd stay far, Far, FAR away from them if at all possible. The tissue damage
and loss from their bite is totally incredible and terrible. Very bad news.

Australia seems to have everything that can kill you all set nice and tidy
on one small continent, so you can get killed where ever you go there.
The most poisonous snakes on the planet, most poisonous spiders on
the planet, and killer Great White Sharks! What's not to love! :google :lol

Funny, I used to have all sorts of tarantulas and scorpions (not to mention boas and pythons) as pets .....

Then we had kids. :monkey1 :monkey3

Yes lol. Thats so true. And even Dingos!!

"The dingo stole me baby!!"

You forgot the crocodiles, the box jellies, the blue ringed octopii, and the killer koalas and boxing kangaroos.

That's a good sized spider JS. That's about the size of our huntsmen spider, non poisonous, but a bite may suffer from infection pretty readily. It is no good to whack these creatures, cause they are all legs. They shrivel up and look so small it makes you feel guilty. I don't mind if one were to take residence in my place. At least they are easy to spot, not like those funnel webs or red backs, that hide under toilet seats and other places your extremities are likely to protrude into.

From memory the Shelob was based on the red back spider. Lucky neither Frodo or Sam were caught with their pants down.

Wow, is that considered big in the states? In my old house we used to have one or two bigger spiders that we just used to let live so they would kill the mozzys and other flying insects.
