This camera was made in Russia and it's the only one in the UK according to the guy in the video. It was tested on Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor. Thanks Reinhardt.

You mean Matt Smith. And very cool, although it seems to take the talent out of the sculptor. I guess in the end I don't care as long as the figure looks good.

Action-jon, your avatar looks like the guy presenting this device in the link. :lol

this is where artistic style from a sculptor will begin to supersede accuracy. Since accuracy can be acheived from a camera / 3D scan.... :monkey1

What do you mean by that boota?, its not like you can use this device on comic book characters or dinosaurs or ancient warriors or monsters, actors who are too old to be scanned for a character they protrayed from an older movie franchise etc.

You'll ALWAYS need sculptors. That camera is great , but totally useless in creating sculpts of actors looks from years ago , Like ANH Luke, ANH Han or dead actors!

I guess your right...but they can always use actual models posing as the characters. So maybe, if sideshow does get their hands on this, they'll probably won't get rid of ALL the sculptors .....but a downsizing is inevitable.

I have spoken with the guy in that video a few times (I know a few members here who have actually had lunch with the guy a number of times). He's a great guy AND a sculptor. It's not just a matter of taking a scan and letting the computer do all the work. Especially at that scale (1:13) there are still a lot of tweekings which occur to a sculpt which have to be done by a sculptor.

What do mean? Why would that work? A guy dressed up like Indy isn't going to come out scanned like Harrison Ford. And the scanner doesn't work on the body, that still needs to be sculpted/tailored. Its for heads, so they don't come out mis-shapen or lacking a defining feature of the actor. Sculptors still do touch ups too. They aren't going anywhere this will just save them time on actors to work on other projects.

They can't scan the Dinosauria line, the Sideshow originals, Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Marvel Comics, Video Games, Disney Cartoons. What does that leave? Do they even have any modern licenses to scan? I guess Lord of the Rings but even those actors are going to look a bit differant after 10 years and not have the same haircuts etc.

This device is a lot more limited then people think.

How is this different from 3D laser scan technology already used by some toy studios (marvel, etc)? Aside from it being smaller.

when can they implement this type of technology on paint apps...? Wouldn't THAT be awesome for shading and stuff? A super airbrush system that works like a laserjet printer but in 3D!

True! It isn't the sculpting we need to worry about. Even on some of the 6 inch figures we have seen some extremely impressive head sculpts. No, this is definitely an issue were paint apps causes the figure to look cheap and lackluster.

that video is funny because its like "look at this awesome sculpt" and then the next frame it shows it all painted up and it just makes it look terrible. 0:57 to 0:59 quality makes a sudden down swing.

I feel for the sculptors right now.
outside of the digital scanning, theres also the huge push for digital sculpting (ZBrush).
While its a cool application and has huge positive effects as far as efficiency and production is concerned, Id hate taking the sculpting literally out of my hands.

isnt this basically the same technology that gentle giantass uses.....except like pix said on a smaller scale?
