Sony Rebooting Spider-Man in 2012!
Source:Sony Pictures January 11, 2010

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the "Spider-Man" franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three 'Spider-Man' films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"'Spider-Man' will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

Whoh boy.... let's see what happens....

I do get tired of origin stories in superhero films though, so I'm hoping they jump right into the action.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

Part of me is a little relieved by this news. I was afraid that with all the superhero films set for the summer of 2011 that there would have been overload on the general public. Now Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America have some breathing room. Basically, I just don't want anything screwing with the chances of an Avengers movie.
As far as Sony going the reboot route, I don't know why there is such a hurry while the Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi films are still fresh in audiences minds. I'm not sure why Sony couldn't have given them the time to do something they would be happy with. On the other hand I never liked Kirsten Dunst in the Mary Jane. I think part of it was her and part of it was the way her character was written.
Its too bad Marvel Studios can't somehow get the movie rights back for this property.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

wow, there must have been an explosion at that studio!

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

Wow, didn't see that coming. And I hate to start with a criticism, but I must admit I don't like the whole young person/teenager vibe.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

Hopefully this means we'll eventually get a better version of the symbiote/Venom story. I want to see my new Olivetti Venom Comiquette on-screen, not some constantly-unmasked Peter Parker stunt double with fangs.

I'd also like a proper Gwen Stacy story, complete with her tragic death and without a Green Goblin that looks like he just left the X-Games motocross circuit.

Oh, and a hotter Mary Jane.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

I'm really for this... the 3 Spidey-movie were very average IMO...Loved by very average movie goers.

Cant wait to see what Marvel studios is gonna do with the franchise..:rock

Completely agree! Especially on the GG part, he looked like something out of that Halo stuff i've been hearing about

Batman Reboots >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Spider-movies.

And I am a Marvel fan.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

so does that mean that in the future there could be a cross-over between Spider-man and Iron man cause that would be sweet

a strong opinion with weak grammar is never a good combination.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

i wonder if disney had something to do with it..really they might of wanted a younger spiderman so they can get fans younger to see it.
you know how there more family oriented.so now the kid can grow up before the audience eyes over time...not a bad idea but it, i am trying to find that right word. isolates some fans and creates new ones. now which disney star will take the role..

What? Average? Spider-Man 3 was the equivlent of....what do you say...oh yes, Caca. I HATED that movie. I'm so glad Raimi got out of that hell hole. He needs to start making some horror flicks.

Re: Spider-Man: The Reboot!

Nope, still owned by differant studios.

but its Marvel studios that is making this reboot so sony pictures distributes, just like Iron man was distributed by paramount and Hulk was distributed by Universal
