Another amazing looking figure.

Lately, I've been getting the itch to add some modern military figures to the collection. I've got a string of figures covering just about every American involved conflict since the first world war. Would like to add some current figures to bring it up to date.

Military figures are something else aren't they? After getting used to licensed figure MSRPs and the QC issues that often go with them, picking up a figure set as loaded and intricate as these is a lot of fun. Some people don't like the kit-out 'cause it can take a couple of hours and involve tweezers, but after the last few bare-boned HT sets - take the figure out of the box and plonk it on a shelf - I kind of miss it.

Excellent point. Plus, you have that historical correlation as well, especially if the figures are a tribute to a real hero.

I had a few GI Joes and 21st Century figures but it was DML/Dragon line that really pulled me into collecting 1/6 figures and especially customizing. I still have many of those on display and they STILL look amazing.

Well, I went ahead and did it. After a double-dose of movies this weekend ("13 Hours" and "Zero Dark Thirty") I went ahead and looked around for comparable figures. The Soldier Story and DAM Toys DEVGRU figures were either sold out or requesting ridiculous prices so I did some research and went with the "Easy & Simple" SMU Tier-1 Operator Part 3 "The Raid" figure. Also threw in the Soldier Story U.S. Army Pilot Aircrew figure to display as a stealth helo pilot on Operation Neptune Spear. Looks like a kit-bash will be required for any of the GRS heroes, as no official figures have yet been made.

Nice to get a fully kitted figure for significantly less than a bare-boned Hot Toys or Sideshow figure.

Yeh, that's another great thing about these, the kitbashing potential. The DEVGRU sets went early 'cause of the history and Zero Dark Thirty, but it's all out there to throw together an accurate bash. The movie-related sets often sell out and increase in price pretty quickly. Mj. Winters (Band of Brothers) and Cpt. Miller (Saving Private Ryan) are pricey nowadays. I like the pilots - for a while I was assembling all the Axis/Allies pilots from WW2, but releases were few and far between and I gave up a few years back - but the range nowadays is huge, whatever era you're into it seems like some company has it covered.

Pilots and astronauts were my main collection for some time. I've got a ton of them on display, still.

Thank goodness I picked up DiD's Winters and the initial release figure, which is supposedly Nixon, when I did. I have DML's "Millier" as well. Skipped on DiD's rendition.

The modern military lines are definitely huge today. I believe that they are released in smaller numbers, too. That's why once they sell out, the prices go up quickly. There are some older figures I wish I would have picked up back when they were initially offered.

I remember, going back at least 15-20 years ago, the old original forums such as "Sixth Division" and "One Sixth Warriors". Those were some good times, too. The newer OSW still exists today and I frequent it from time to time.

OSW went through a bit of a difficult change a short time back, not unlike what's happened recently on this forum (reasons were very different though, I wasn't paying enough attention to exactly what went down over there). It's still a good place to go for info about military figures, they've built a real friendly community - loads of ex-military and army geeks who care about the small details on their action figures, it's pretty awesome :lol
